Walked out today to see my lower unit case had busted or cracked and is leaking gear oil. Where is the best place to get another lower unit? What do they normally run from Mercury? 02 200 Optimax

I would go through your local mercury dealer. You can also save some money by having your dealer contact mercury and checking on remanufacture gearcases, they come with a 1 year full warranty. http://www.mercurymarine.com/repower/ou … gearcases/

I got a remanufactured lower unit from Mercury last April when I busted mine. 2002 200 Opti. Parts/Labor/Taxes was almost $2800. I believe most Mercury service centers can get you one in short order.Last edited by tab2005 on February 2nd, 2013, 10:47 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Why did it bust? Did you hit something or did it freeze?

Guessing it froze. I always lower my engine completely upon returning home. It has been parked in the same location for almost 4yrs without an issue. It blew out the side just below the pick ups.

Seems odd to freeze and bust in that position. Wonder if there was water in the gear case?

I suspect that you will need a case only. Have a dealer inspect gears and bearings. That would be much less than purchasing a complete gear case. Maybe worth a try? Used cases are out there for $200 or $300 Last edited by PhilAddison on February 3rd, 2013, 12:21 am, edited 2 times in total.

May have found a complete lower unit with only 250 hours on it for $500.

Had the same issue last year, I had a tear in the seal, did not know, it never leaked any oil but when temp droped she froze and the case blew out, its a 225 pro xs no damage inside but the case was $1600.00. Good luck.
