I am new to the BCB world and do like the cat. This boat rides and performs like no other boat I have been in. It is a 2008 classic w/200HPDI with a Yamaha 25 prop. The boat has a manual jack plate. The question that I have is when driving when I get around 68 to 70 it starts to dart side to side at about 3/4 trim up. I can trim it back down and it will stop doing it. Does this mean that this is all its got or is there something I can do to keep it from doing this?
You may be overtrimming the hull. Bass Cat hulls do not require full trim or near the limits of trim. It sounds like you are going to begin working on set up once you get the hang of driving it on top end. There may be more left, and there may not, though most run just a little bette than you are now.
Dunk – I just traded in a 2007 Classic with a 200 HPDI. Had hydraulic plate and ran a 26 Fury. I consistently ran 72-74 loaded and spent many hours in the seat. My boat would walk in similar manner if my plate was slightly below the optimal level. I could bump my plate up to the right spot, steering would get tighter and walk would stop. Be careful with setup but consider raising (incrementally of course). Good luck and hope this helps.
You are experiencing “Chine Walk”. The boat has more in it. You just need seat time and learn how to drive it. Welcome to the family!
Dunk, It sounds like youre experiencing chinewalk. Normal for BCB and many other brands at higher speeds. It happens when you boat falls off of the pad to the right or left. To keep this from happening I keep slight pressure to the left with slight bumps to the left on the steering wheel in anticipation of the chinewalk. The setup and the way you have the boat loaded can have an effect on how bad it walks. It will take some time to learn to drive it but youll get it. Im sure others on here can explain it better than me. With the right setup and someone that can drive it your boat is capable of 75+ mph.
Welcome to the family. There are several of us here who are new to Basscat, who have Classics with 200s, and are learning how to drive these very fast rigs. Come along and learn with us. If you do a search under Pantera Classic you will find lots of info to read. I found it really helped me learn how to drive it. How to work live wells etc. is also here. More info in FAQ section. Re trim, mine likes it a little below or above 1/4 trim. Take off and trim up to about half way below 1/4 trim. Then while running full throttle bump up the trim in little bumps until she gets up to full speed. There is minimum of 2 plus mph left past “CW” in most if not all setups. That being said the P-Classic speeds could be way out there with the speced boat weight and need for speed load setup. Thanks for the help, I may raise the jack plate a little and see if I see any difference. I just found it odd that on other boats that I have been involved with you can trim them all the way up and wish you had more and on the cat you can not get up much more than 1/2 way. Guess BCB just has it figured out how to get it out of the water without much effort!
It is the design of the boat itself that lends it to not requiring as much trim. Anything over cowling height is just wasted rpms.If you do decide to raise or adjust the jackplate, be sure to mark your initial spot before moving it. Im running a Classic with a 200 merc carbed with 25 Tempest. Turning near 5800 rps and right at 70 mph. ZERO chine walk and it doesnt like any more than 1/4 trim. Anything more and it starts to rooster tail and starts slowing down. This may just be mine, but the ride is great.
