2008 Cougar Advantage/Mercury Opti 250

I just placed an order for a new Cougar Advantage, originally with a 225 Optimax but have requested the motor to be changed to a 250 Optimax. Anyone have any suggestions on what prop I should run? Any estimates on the top speed I can expect? Is this a good combination? Im not a speed freak but I want it there if I need it. Thanks BCB and hurry with that new Cougar, LOL! Kevin

That will be an awsome combo. As far as the prop that depends alot on your load. Usually BCB will recommend a 26P or 27P Trophy and you will see speeds in the upper 70s. Be carefull that will be a hot rig! Brian Hash

Kevin, You will be pleased with that engine. The 250 Pro XS optimax engines are beasts, and will run fine on 87 octane, and premium plus oil. And, they are good on both, if you dont run it flat out every where you go!! Try the 26 Trophy first, and see what you get. Youll need about 15 to 18 hours on that engine to really break it loose, so dont be in a huge hurry to buy more props. I”ve seen about 77 on my CougarFTD with the same prop and engine. Go slow, and learn the boat. Things happen very quickly above 70 mph. Mike Whitten/Germantown, TN

Prop – Kevin, most will run the 26 Trophy on this rig with a few running the 27 Trophy. Top Speed – Mid to upper 70s loaded. Is it a good combo – We think so Hurry up BCB – Weeez sure trying Thanks, BCB

Kevin… the 26 trophy will be your best bet as far as what to order with your rig… great holeshot, stable and very good top end… If you buy a spare prop order the 27 trophy…. It does really great in colder h2o (late fall through early spring)…. a little slower on the holeshot… faster top end and a hundred or two lower on the rpms…

In December, we ordered & purchased a 20 Cougar Advantage Elite from Big D Outdoors in Beaumont, TX and although we had a Mercury on our previous boat (procraft), we went with Yamaha on this one. So far, tops at 78 MPH (boat loaded) & it wanted to go faster but we backed off b/c we need more seat time. Our prop is a 3-blade Tempest. WE LOVE OUR CAT! You will not be disappointed!

Thanks for all the info guys, this is my 3rd Cat. I see know reason to ever change brands. The service is awesome. Not to mention their just dang good looking boats.

Be sure to try a 27″ Trophy, with all of the PVS holes fully plugged and no blow-out ring. The hole-shot and acceleration as well as lift will impress you. If running a manual jackplate, you can run engine height up as high as 2 7/8″ below pad with no problems, either. Gary Hollander p.s. Be glad you went with the 250 Pro XS!

Kevin, I had and just sold my 07 Cougar FTD and as I recall the Cougar Advantage is the same hull. I ran a 27 Trophy most of the time and ran 80+. My “spare” is a 26 Trophy. BUT………I actually selected which prop to run on a trip by trip basis. If I was in a tournament making a long run and wanted overall speed, I ran the 27. If on the other hand, I was on a body of water with a lot of twists and turns, was making a lot of stops and short hops etc., I ran the 26. If I can help you in any way with prop choice, set up, etc., feel free to let me know. I will be happy to call and talk to you in person if you need. You will LOVE that boat!
