2008 Puma/ 250 Pro XS speed

75 degree air temp and 82 degree water. Jackplate is flush. 2 guys and their gear and about 20 gallons gas with livewells empty. Best I could manage was 73.7 at 5880 rpm with 26 Trophy. Your speed is equivalent to the 225s. Raise the jack plate 1/8″ to 1/4″ above flush. You should gain 2 to 3 MPH. Take your time when trimming. Dont over trim. It takes this hull a little time to respond but you will be happy with the results. Forgot to add. You need to try a 27 Trophy or a 26 Fury. Actually had the plate a 1/4″ above flush to start. The torque steer was too much, seems about right where its at. Im beginning to think maybe the prop needs worked.

Youre going to have to turn a bigger wheel at the same rpms to gain any appreciable speed. You might also check and make sure the throttle is going all the way open. As stated, try a 26 Fury or 27 Trophy and see what that does for you!

The height is in response to all the recent posts about motor height. I guess I should have qualified the post a little better. There was still trim left and I would think enough to get to 6000 rpms and maybe more. Experience/ seat time is the other limiting factor.

The engine needs a little time to break in some. They gain a bit once they have some time, plus once you get time to figure out the specifics. It is hard to say from one to another where you are on each individual rig. Some run better and some not as well, and just keep tweaking it until you figure out a propeller, engine height and your trim angles. BCB

Yep, giving all the information certainly helps. Until you figure out all the characteristics of your boat and feel comfortable trimming it all the way out, then its going to be hard to tell you how fast your boat is going to run. Without knowing max rpms youre spinning your wheels guessing at prop pitch, prop work, new prop, different style prop, etc. etc. What you have may be fine as you can gain a couple mph by trimming it all the way out and then down a couple clicks and being able to drive for about 1/2 mile to mile without interruption.

I just purchased this same boat and motor. The Smartcraft gauges are a little intimidating. Im used to seeing a trim gauge needle showing me where my motor is tilted at all times. Ive only got the first hour of break-in time and not had the rpms over 5400. 1. Do you normally set the “mode” to show trim during running? 2. KerthPuma says hes running 73.7 at 5880 rpms. I thought mid-70s was expected for this boat/motor. If not, what speed should we expect? And how many rpms can we run before shortening the life of the motor?

We usually turn the Trim Pop Up mode OFF. Iy gets annoying to have it constantly Popping UP every time you hit the trim button. The Speed range will vary jsut like fuel mileage on a vehicle and performance does as well on a vehicle, though we dont learn that one.

Trim height by the gauge is way overrated! As BCB pointed out, all engines, boats, set ups, and water conditions are different and will cause different performance numbers.
