2010 Puma…uneven tire wear questions..

I have a 2010 Puma FTD which the front port side Cooper tire is wearing badly on the the outside 1/3 of the tire. All the othe other 3 are wearing evenly. I dont recall having any impact that would have caused any alignment problems. What can be done to correct this ? Thanks in advance. Tom Wilkinson

Tom, it is usually a bent spindle. The wear should not be showing up now on a 2010 otherwise. The idler can be replaced on that axle, assuming this is Vault hubs. If it is a welded spring trailer then axle needs straightened.

It does have the Vault hubs. Can I order the idler and install it myself if I have good mechanical skills, or is special tooling required?

Yes, the idler is one bolt and spread the clamp jaw from around the splined shaft. Tap it off slowly and mark the location so you can replace it on the right angle.

If anyone having this problem and replace the idler, did it correct your problem. I had mine replaced and only have about 500 miles on it, but seems to be wearing the tire again. If it continues I wonder what another solution could be. Like the others, I dont believe I have struck anything. Thanks.

We are not sure the idler will repair it unless the spindle is bent. The other answer is an axle replacement.

Once a tire has started an uneven tire wear, even if you correct the cause, the tire will always show an uneven tire wear. You must replace the tire to see if you corrected the problem. Sorry if I am telling you something you already know.

Yes, I rotated my right side tires to the left side so I could keep a eye on the tire wear, and it seems like it is having the same wear pattern on the outside. I will keep a eye on it. Bass Cat, this is a 2010 trailer with the Vault system, you say there is a axle I may have to replace. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the idlers (spindles) can be kept and just the axle replaced. Obviously this is a newer issue though parts may assist you on the upgrade. The axle bolts under the frame and the idlers remove easily.
