Was just wondering what height everyone was running there plate at. I just got my new puma ftd and I am not used to running a rocket sled. I am coming out of a R boat. Any help would be great. Thanks
Depends on how they mounted the jackplate but if it is flush then I run mine at 1 inch above flush and pretty much leave it there.http://www.vrbo.com/297770
Just keep it low till you get familiar with it.
JoeThere is no exact answer to your question since you have a hydraulic jack plate. With that said, do as BCB suggests until you get some hours under you. Different props, different loads in the boat, and even weather conditions will dictate the height of the plate where best performance is achieved. However, even that will not be determined until youre able to drive the boat up to max potential without any chine walk. Here are some general tips for you:1. Fury props generally perform better at a lower setting than others. Adjusting height on the jack plate using this props gains very little. 1-2 mph at most. A Fury prop at high heights can be dangerous.2. Your boat with a heavy load will likely perform better at a lower setting. 3. Torque at the steering wheel usually indicates the height of the jack plate is too high.4. The height at which your boat performs best is likely to be around 3″ – 3 1/2″ prop shaft below pad of the boat.Without knowing what prop youre running, what your driving abilities are, and how much weight you are carrying the boat, your question can not be answered. As said above, until you get the feel of your boat, then leave the plate a low setting. Good luck!
You aint kiddin about the fury up high. Take a fuy 25 and look at the ear size versus at tempest 25.Big difference.C.O.D. Jr. III
Ivan put a 26 fury on when it left shop. I can drive it pretty good. Top speed 77.8 mph so far. only have 11 hrs. on it. Chine is not a problem for me. I just am looking for some tips.
Joe, Phil has given you a very good overall general answer. Most run their plates around 1/4 on the gauges and on manual plates close to level between the inner and outer plates. The range varies as load changes slippage or propeller bite extremely, since water is not a solid medium like your tires and road surface are. Water and props change drastically as the water is what the blade is trying to bite for the forward motion. Basically propellers are small canoe paddles. Now how much does a canoe paddle bite? So your answer is very general as there are too many variations in propellers, load, engines, boats, fuel and driving styles or abilities. We hope this gives you a why on there being No set it here gor best performance. To set it properly for performance go up till you feel steering torque when fully loaded. Just a touch of torque on the top end, then lower it from 1/8″ to 1/4″ and you should gave it right for fishing.
I am also curious as to how much trim everyone uses. I know this is kinda a stupid question but I need to know how to answer this when talking to new basscat owners on demo rides. I am looking for a percentage on my merc digital trim gauge. I know it all depends on load and throttle, just looking at top end. Thanks
You watch your GPS speed and RPM to determine the engine trim. This also varies and to be honest, most of those better drivers can not tell you where their trim is. They drive by the numbers, and not those trim numbers.
Agree completely with the above statement. I never look at my gauges just my numbers. Conditions change so much during a day that there is no way for a set position, thus the reason for the hydraulic plagte
