2012 250 Pro XS leaking oil?

Last Sunday was wiping the Cat down after a day of fishing. Noticed the lower unit was a little oily. Sent my dealer an E-mail to drop it off after fishing Truman today for check up. When I was hookin up this morning I noticed a small puddle under the skeg? Was finally raining in Missouri today so I didnt run hard on the lake. When I pulled out and was buttoning things down a small stream of oil was leaking from cowling and running down lower unit. Dropped it off at my BCB dealer on the way home. Anybody got any ideas what this could be?

Hopefully all it will be is a loose line coming from the oil reservoir or something similar. Did you take the cowling off to look and see if you could tell where it was coming from.

It may just be the cap of the oil reservoir on the motor. There was a bad batch of those caps that came out of production and they werent sealing well. Weve replaced several here for the same reason. Mercury replaces the whole reservoir in most cases. Its an easy fix and doesnt take long at all to complete the repair. Id be suprised if this was something big. Assume its a oil res (as already suggested) or maybe an oil line but as long as your alarm didnt sound your good, even if it did you have time. I had a line pull off the inline filter and caused simular issue but the alarm sounded and I had extra oil onboard so I fixed it but could see this happening to other quite easly.

Sit a tub under it or paper and determine if this is gear oil or engine oil.

Hi If the leak is from the cowling it is probably th resivoir cap as the guys have mentioned. However had the same problem and low and behold on the manufacturing process 2 bolts were left out of the block causing oil to seep and this did not show up until several months after purchase. Mercury sent me a new block overnight and did not even blink. Great Warranty!!! Hope yours is simple. by the way mine was also a 2012

What Andy said. I had a bad cap on my 2011 175 Pro XS. Frustrated me for weeks until I figured it out.

Thanks BCB and everybody for insight. Its definitely engine oil, its running down the lower cowling. Am industrial electrical/maintenance technician, I smelled it to be sure-not gear oil-they smell different!!! Never got into alarm. Dropped it off at my BCB dealer Sunday. This is not a BCB issue, its a Mercury issue. Am confident Midwest will have me on the water ASAP.

Probably a cap or loose line.

Just spoke to my dealer. Had to order new oil resevoir and cap. Seems if Mercury suspects bad caps went out, they should give a “heads up” dealers and individuals. Although I am not inconvenienced terribly, it could sure ruin a vacation in a brand new rig! Nothing around the motor should rust for a long time, its well oiled.
