I have the 09 puma and coming from the 95 ranger w/ no “walk” to a boat that felt like it could throw you out at any moment is scary. the jackplate is the key. my ranger didnt have 1 but it would max at 65-66 mph w/ a old 200 EFI. I have found that if you start w/ the jack plate all the way up, trim all the way down, obviously gets the best hole shot. A little before the boat breaks over from the hole shot start moving the jackplate down to keep the prop from catching too much air and not enough water as the rpm will go up and the boat will come back to rest in the water and the process starts all over again. As the boat planes out I lower the jackplate about half or so of its total travel and then trim the motor up to really give the boat some lift. Im not really comfortable above 70 so ive never tried to hit 80.
