2017 caracal fuel tanks ballooning!!!

After a day of fishing I open my rear compartment to charge my batteries for the next day and I noticed my left 26 gal. fuel tanklooked like a balloon. I opened the fuel cap and a huge amount of air pressure was released. The same happened with my right 26 gal. As well. To me this seems very dangerous, but is it normal or do I have a problem?

My 26 gallon Caracal tanks expand as well. Its normal to have all that pressure when you open the fuel caps.

BCB will chime in but I thought the fuel tanks were only pressurized to about 1-2 pounds. That would release air when you open the fuel tank cap but it wouldnt be enough to balloon the tank. That is a thick tank.

I going to say u got a vent stopped up, or kinked.I like phonix, little preasure is normal.

1-2 lbs seems to be more than what you think it should be and it will swell more than you think. Particularly a plastic tank. The tank itself is not that thick but does have a bladder inside. The tank has a relief valve that will release the presure if it gets high enough.

My local dealer said its normal due to ethanol content in todays fuel. I was also told even the summer heat would cause this to occur even while sitting outside on dry land. Also, supposedly using higher grade fuel will lessen the expansion also!

That is not normal at all. To even suggest it is ludacrithp! The fuel tank vent is not working. “IF” this is normal it is a WRONG normal

Phil nailed it above. Although 1-2 PSI doesnt sound like much it makes quite the noise. It will swell the tank some. Designs have recently changed to comply with the EPA. Not sure about the ethanol comment. I run no ethanol and still very noticeable. I have no issues and dont consider it a problem. Just make sure when refueling it has fully vented before you start pumping.

2 psi will ballon the plastic tank. It doesnt seem like much, but its a lot of volume. Pressure is normal. Even your gas can will hold pressure and balloon. You can thank your new EPA regulations for that change.
