225 Pro XS Loud Pop and down

Fished Conroe on Friday and was running across the lake around 65 there was a loud pop and the motor shut down. I had to use both hands to pull it back into neutral and then it would fire up, but it would not do anything. Has anyone else suffered the same problem and what was it?

Well if i take both hands and pull it back into neutral it will fire up, but it is almost impossible to get it into neutral. What does that likely mean?

Sounds like the powerhead blew…then the input shaft locked up…then maybe lower unit issues. Does it idle fine without a clapping noise? Can you put in in gear from idle? Pull the spark plugs and see if one or more is detonated….thats where you start.

Sounds like to me you have lower unit issues. If it starts and runs OK in neutral and is hard for you to put it in gear, then likely you have gear issues. If when you start it and runs rough and make bad noises then its likely to be powerhead issues. Though, from you description, it sounds like a shaft, bearing, gear issue. Take it to Bowden Marine and let William take a look at it. By the way, when in neutral, can you turn the prop by hand?

I am checking the lower unit (gearcase) first, then going to the power head. Run it over to William and John. BCB

I had the same thing about a year ago. I was running at WOT and then started loosing power. At that time there was a loud bang, clank, pop or what ever you want to call it and then nothing. It took me a little bit to get it out of gear then it started and idled fine. The shifter moved fine but it would not go into gear. After taking it to the mechanic, he told me that the inner or uppper seal blew on the lower unit and thus leaked all the lube out and locked up the gear case snapping the drive shaft. they replaced the entire lower unit and shaft. Thank goodness for warranties. 05 225 Pro XS Hopefully this helps. Ron S

One very simple way to find out if its your powerhead! Just pull your spark plugs and if you popped a cylinder, that spark plug will be white on the tip instead of brown or black like it should be. Thats what happens when your cylinder gets too hot and pops. It will be very obvious. It does, as Phil and BCB stated, sound like your lower unit is the problem. thanks guys for all the input. Yeah i was pretty releived to find out that is was a lower unit problem. Both gears were gone. William and Jeff told me there were several things that could cause this to happen but no one can be for sure. I am now waiting on an answer from Mercury whether it is covered under the warranty. Will keep everyone informed about how it goes. Once again thinks for all the info guys. Oh yeah tell Tony and Jeremy to leave the fish alone on Conroe they have been wearing them out. Phil good luck in Bass Champs this weekend.
