Has anyone ever used the after market coils from Caltric or CDI? And if anyone has used them what is your opinion?

Coils are not made by Mercury, though a jobber/vendor. If they match the specs then they should work.

My opinion is that if they also sell fuel rails you outta carry some of them too!

I would suggest caution. I STILL remember a hot 2.5 motor I built back in the 90s. Used the land & sea high compression dual plug heads. Bought the coils locally (non-mercury). One failed and lunched cylinder #1 (it needed BOTH sparks to properly fire and not overheat. I decided to rebuild but scrapped the dual plug heads as too risky. Was careless and just picked 6 coils out of the 12 I had. One was flakey. Very flakey. Finally caught it running on muffs. It was a non-merc coil. Whether they are all like that or not, I dont know.I simply use the “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” Critical parts I dont scrimp on.

Thanks for the replies. I have an 07 that had the bad coils. One went out under warranty but instead of changing them all they only changed the bad one and ignored the recall info on them. Last year I had 1 more replaced and just had another one go. I was just going to buy 4 and replace all the old ones. Hopefully one of the newer ones didnt go out. I will check and see if they replaced them with the Merc branded coils. Hopefully that solves the problem. The last time I had it in a shop they couldnt figure it out. After 3 trips and $400 and me telling them it was a coil they finally found it. They said they didnt feel right about charging me for the labor the 4th time…..lol Go figure, Like I was gonna pay labor charges again. There is a great shop 2 hours away so I guess that will be where I take it from now on. There a R dealer but have always treated me good when I went in there for various parts. I was just trying to stay with a Bass Cat Dealer. They have changed owners but do I risk it or not. They did try to sell me a Yamaha though…lol

From years of experience my pessimism has me researching the origin of the the parts and not the name on the box.

Only thing I find irritating is that MUCH of the parts market comes with “Made in China” or “Made in Korea” stamped on the box. While some parts made in China/etc are perfectly OK, MANY are not. From Tires to tiddlywinks.
