Its a 2006 250xs Mercury Racing division motor just had it serviced and everything checked out from stem to stern poppit valve, thermostats, strainer, fuel lines, water pump, lower unit seals, spark plugs, fuel sys cleaned out. Boat & motor are new to me. Itg got a 26 bravo on it and when you put it in gear it has a loud clunk. No problemb putting in gear and no resistance and it goes into gear just fine but the clunk bothers me, Idle is set at 550 rpms and is confirmed on the smart craft guage. I have never owned a 250 before and the mechanic has told me this is normal but that clunk will make you cringe every time. Respect everyones opinion and just wanted to get some other peoples view on this. Thanks guys.

If the idle speed is correct…the clunk is normal.The gear system has a clutch dog that engages lugs on the back of the gears. Ir will clunk and is designed to do so. Do not ease it into gear as this will cause the clutch dog and gears to wear prematurely.

Where are you located? Have you run the boat much if so how hard and how long? Is it smooth running? Mine makes a little clunk going into gear. All of the ones Ive owned do but I also know the only XS Ive ever been around had LU problems from the start.

This 250xs is the smothest engine i have ever had it runs like a skalded dog and purrs like a kitten. It pushes a 20ft 2006 NORRIS CRAFT. Only had it for about 4 months and still going over it good. Live in Mobile Al, To hot right now to fish so doing some bunk replacement. I always put it in gear briskly. Just changed the lower unit oil again and everything looked good.

Its normal and continue to shift gears briskly as you describe.

Do check the distance from center for the shifter just to be sure it is adjusted properly.
