Has anyone on here running any of the BCB FTD models, 250 ProXS, Gen2 TM gearcase, two Power Poles, and 4 batteries tried adding the extra set of vent holes to a 26 Fury? If so, how did it help or hurt your holeshot, and where do you live (this question is regarding climate)?
We believe Phil is doing some solid testing this year which will give everyone here a realistic opinion and not one jaded by dollars spent and outside influence.
Ill give my unrealistic opinion and loophole testing to try to help a fellow BCB brother. Im a working dude who has bills to pay like the rest of us and I dont have any sponsors or a sugar mama to pay for things. I had to do my own trial and error because no one seemed to have an answer for my boat other then Mark Croxton who said to try the Bravo and the additional vent holes. That being said I had holeshot issues with my 2012 Eyra, 4 batteries, power poles etc, Pro XS 250 however I do not have the Gen2 TM. If I had full fuel, livewells full, full tackle and a partner and his stuff I would labor to get on plane. If you would like you could do a search on here for “spare prop recommendations” you can read my trials and errors of prop testing to try to find the right propeller. In a nutshell heres what I found that worked better then anything else I tried. A 26 Fury with additional vent holes added by Mark Croxton. I dont remember the size of the hole but because of the barrel supports they can only be so big. I know a BCB guy on here also drills them for fellow anglers but I dont remember his handle name. 2nd prop is a 27 Bravo XS with additional PVS holes added. With the Bravo XS you will need to raise your jackplate about 1 inch over where the Fury sits (ie if you are at 3.5″ below pad on the Fury bring it up to about 2.5″ below pad however I would be very careful going any higher as I have had no experience with the prop to pad height being any higher then this and dont know if it would cause a blow out at speed). You will also lose 1-2 mph with the Bravo at WOT. I have a manual jackplate and Im told that a hydraulic does help holeshot as well however that may be because they are jaded or have outside influence. My elevations are between 450 and 2300 feet however Im in AZ and with the heat we have here Im sure that accounts for robbing of additional HP in lieu of elevation. Hope this helps. Please feel free to PM with any additional questions on set up you may have and I will try to help.
Chris, I had Mark Croxton add holes to the prop of my boat, a boat you were somewhat familiar with Before adding the 3 additional vent holes, the motor would labor getting up out of the hole with 2 of us and full livewells, etc. After the addition of the holes, the holeshot definitely improved. It isnt all that much quicker out of the hole, but, the motor is not laboring like it used to. I live in MN.
PROPS – PROPS – PROPS !!! — My 2 cents worth , for what its worth . — For those of us that dont have hydraulic jackplates , for whatever reason , you will have to come to some sort of compromise between getting the best holeshot / top speed combination . — Youve got to figure out WHERE youre willing to sacrifice performance , as its real hard to get the best on both ends of the performance spectrum . — Personally , Ill sacrifice a few M.P.H. up top to have a good holeshot . — Just my humble opinion . — Mark
Chriswb98 I have that set up minus 1 pole. I talked with Sherm at Sherms Marine in regards to that set up and he recommends a 25P Fury for that set up you have described due to the rear weight. I have had an issue with hole shot and RPMs. Took Sherms recommendations with the 25 P Fury. What a big difference.Last edited by BassCatCowboy on August 19th, 2014, 11:58 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Ill let you know how it works out Chris after this weekend. Ive got some holes drilled in one of my props. I told you last year your boat top end speed was weak. Lol! I guess you didnt believe me.
Not a Puma FTD, but on my Eyra the 25″ fury is markedly better in the hole shot area and only gives up about 1.5mph on top end. Very much worth the trade off to me. I have run 26″ fury, 27″ fury, 27″ trophy so far and although they were all faster on top, but the overall performance of the 25″ fury is much better. I too want the best all around and may very well buy a 26″ and have it sent off for the extra vent holes. I have a 27″ fury in my garage that has been modified and havent had a chance to run it yet. Ill let yall know when I do and tell you how it does. Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
Thanks all. Last year, on my Puma FTD (4 flooded cell batteries, two Power Poles, and Atlas hyd. jackplate), I ran a 25 Fury, with no vent plugs, and the holeshot was great loaded with tackle, a coangler, and full livewells. Im also running a 25 Fury on my 15 Puma FTD, same set up as above, but this one came with 2 med vent plugs installed (I think), and with next to nothing in the boat the holeshot was slow. Yes, i did try the plate at different heights. Needless to say, I removed the plugs, and the holeshot greatly improved. Phil, keep me posted.
