BCB, is there any other way of securing the battery charger to the back transom or another location that would be better. Just checked on mine to make sure they were still charging and three of the screws have pulled out and the battery charger is just hanging there by one screw. This is the second time it has happened.
You can clean the holes out with BrakeKleen and fill them up with plastic steel and let it set up. Then just drill a small pilot hole and put the screws back in.
Mine is hanging on by one screw. All of the tabs on my battery charger that the screw goes through have broken, I cant fix that. Cant wait to hear some other ways to mount these things for the future. My idea would be to have a fixed plate mounted in the back to screw or fasten the charger to. My tabs broke cause the back of the transom isnt flush so when the screws were tightened the tabs had pressure on them and after time they broke. Greg
Guys, We have used this mounting method for several decades so it has some history in the durability. The first thing we would want to kno wis the year models. Then the ownership, first, second or third owner, or more? We really have little trouble with the mount location. So we are interested in knowing what we have here. BCB
Boat a 2006 Pantera IV bought new has the Pro Pak 3 Bank charger, boat serial No. BASN2964A606. Right now looking at adding a plastic insert to help tighten up screws in hole. I got caught out in the St. Lawrence River near the mouth of Lake Ontario this past week when the winds really picked up. Between that and the Tour Boats and cruisers I had a pretty nasty ride back to Clayton, NY. Taking my time but still ruff. Figure that is what broke the charger loose.
Probably so, though we have had several boats used on Ontario by folks we know, including Rick & Ron. Ron preferred going to Sacketts Harbor and Rick was headed to Main Duck Island or Sandy, both went long before GPS. With Kota and others at Erie, we have not seen an issue. So this is limited from our perspective. Resin or some form of a hard filler, really hard, would help. Anchors in the transom might work also. Though we are shooting in the dark. That transom in an06 is a glass transom, though the holes could be a little wobbled from the movement. Most here know we wish the on board chargers were never installed, and we did it first. Though the market was developing and would have eventually happened. Still these are a high maintenance item in boats and we prefer the use carry chargers. And that is not trying to dodge a hit on the topic, just the way we feel. The fix above or larger screws might help you out. One other thing I have had luck with when helping friends. Get some _good_ marine-grade RTV silicone. Remove the screws, and repair the holes first. Then clean the glass where the charger contacts it, and run a good bead of the RTV down the mounting brackets where they contact the boat. If it mounts on the bottom, this is a one-man job, otherwise you need a helper. Position the charger, and without moving it, install the screws and tighten them down. Let it sit until the RTV cures. Ive never had one mounted like that work its way loose again, but you can remove it if needed, with a box cutter to remove the RTV bead, then cutting between the glass and bracket. But personally, I dont use em in the boat. I simply use three good sears fully-automatic chargers mounted in my garage above the boat where I can connect, charge, and then leave em home when I hit the water. OT57, One thing to think about on the RTV is the lack of resistance to oil and often that environment is prone to oil saturation. BCB
