4 Batteries In An Old Cougar FTD

I brought this up once before and was thoroughly reamed by the faithful, but Ill try again. How do you fit 4 decent size batteries in the back of a 2 tank Cougar FTD? If the hoses had been fit a tad longer you might be able to dangle one sideways over the bilge, but I dont see how it can be done as built. Never mind the extra headache when you have to change a pump if you did it that way. You could put a little strain on some hoses and get it in, but imagine the headache trying to get it out of the way to plug the leak when you break a fitting because of the extra strain. Those appear to be the newer single rear access door style. For that style it would work ok I suppose, but on my FTD it would make filling the oil tank an awkward proposition, not withstanding that I would need to fabricate a bracket to keep the oil tank from resting on the hoses and pumps. Why ? At this point would you want four batteries ? Get 3 31 series and you should be good.

I ran 3 group 30s/31s for quite a while. On a current flip bite I run the batteries pretty darn low. I want four. Does the reason matter? Its what I want. I am actually considering removing one of the gas tanks to give me more room. My longest tournament run is about 18 miles. One tank gives me a range of about 35-40 depending on speed. 70-80 if I can get gas at the other end. (maybe more) Sure I can run 70+ miles of river, but I dont need too. I havent put any gas in the right tank in three years anyway. I doubt Ill ever sell this boat anyway, so thats not an issue. Its just had too much hard luck for me to sell it in good conscience. I just had Sherm do this to my 03 Cougar FTD. I have had 4 batteries for some time but one of them was turned sideways and on a plastic tray. This is a much better setup and my oil tank is much more easily accessible. I have two power pole pumps and a jackplate pump in there and it is tight but moving the oil resevior really helped free up space.

Take a look under back lids of Eyra to see where the oil reservoir is located. It has been much easier to fill with it located on the outside of the fuel tank and it frees up space for batteries and easy access to pumps and hoses. Not sure why this cannot be done on Cougars and Pumas. I think Mr. Rick told me it has to do with floatation.

In the old location where it was farther back and closer to the livewell, it was harder for me to get to it to lift it out. Where it is now I dont need to lift it out to fill. I could but the line from the hydro plate pump gets in the way a little.
