Anyone running a 52″ shaft trolling motor on their Cat? I came across a great deal on a slightly used Minn Kota. Dont fish big water a ton but there have been plenty of times that I couldnt keep my 42″ in the water. Didnt know if there were really any negatives to having the longer shaft motor? By the way, its going on a 2002 Sabre
I have the ultrex on my Jag in a 52 inch. It sits up high enough that the rod box lid just fits underneath the head when stowed. Dont know about the saber though. I like having the longer length when choppy.
Personally, I wouldnt put a 52″ on a Sabre. I have a 45″ Ultrex on my Eyra and very happy with it. Guess it really depends on where you fish. Can you open the rod locker with a 52″? I had a 45″ Fortrex on my 08 Sabre.I think you can get great deals on a lot of slightly used Fortrex units if thats what youre looking at. I sold mine cheap. Guy was at the dealer where I was having the Ultrex installed and had cash. I didnt want to deal with shipping it so sold it right there. Yeah I picked it up for cheap. Ill give it a try for a while and see how I like it. Ill keep my other one around in case I dont like it. Ive fished places in the past where my trolling motor spent half of the time out of the water. So I figured this would remedy that. I should be able to raise the shaft up if Im fishing shallow water??
I have one on my Caracal. It came with it. Ive not had an opportunity to need it yet, but Im certain it may well come in handy some day.
I have the 52 Ultrex on my P4. Had a 45 Terrova on it prior and when it was windy and my fat butt had to go to the back of the boat for something while spot-locked, it would often come out of the water/cavitate annoyingly. Now were in a historic drought and i have to raise it higher than i would like, but I have gotten used to it. helps that i used hand-controlled trollers with foot switches for years and got used to having a handle sticking up in the past.
I have a p4 with a 50inch motor guide tour.I fish Erie/st.clair and still lose bite pretty often.it can be a little annoying when fishing shallow and trying to roll cast-but I wouldnt have a shorter shaft ever again.my best advice would be to get a quick slip, its a cam that lets you adjust the depth of your TM with the flick of a lever instead of dealing with the annoying knob or wing nut in rough water.the quick slip is the berries, and the inventor is a hammer on the Great Lakes and part of the Basscat family.
Thanks for the replies guys. I do fish shallow rivers fairly often so I was kinda wondering about the so much of the shaft sticking up so high. I guess I just see how I like it.
I have seen three complaints…(1) head can stick up pretty high. If you cast left-handed and like to make underhand casts for soft presentations, you can break a rod if you are not careful. (2) with the foot control so far forward on a bass cat, if you raise the motor for shallow fishing, you might have a problem stowing the motor as the cable length can be an issue. The electric steer motors are better here since the stranded wiring is less stiff than the steering cables. You have to be careful on the bend radius of the steering cables or you will kink the cable housing and make steering quite difficult.(3) port rod locker can interfere depending on the height of the motor mount and how high you raise it. Most of my fishing tends to be shallow, but I do fish offshore structure (ledges and such) regularly. If the waves get high enough, my 45″ shaft doesnt work so well and makes things noisy. But since I fish shallow often, raising and lowering it would be a pain as well. I bought a 52″ MG on an older boat, and did not like it. The cable length wasnt an issue back then as that was before recessed foot controls, but the motor did stick up a lot.Like everything else in a boat, this is a compromise. You have to try it to see if you like it or not.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
I havent had an issue with the cable being too short when motor is set high. The issue that happens first is that it wont stow b cause the top of the motor is hits the plastic yoke that normally cradles the shaft.
