93 XRI 200 EFI —Is it possible for the impeller or housing be bad and it still be peeing a good steam of water. Still reading 180 degrees average and sometimes reaching 200. Ive changed poppit valve, thermostats, and assumed the impeller and housing was still good, seeing I put a new one in it last fall when rebuilding lower unit, and that it is peeing seemingly fine. Stumped!!! Any clues would be appreciated…
Own my old 88 model 150 I even had a analog water temp. Even though not the most accurate way of reading water temp. To many variances with these gauges. IMO just because one is peeing doesnt mean the motor is not overheating. When mercury come out with smartcraft this was a big plus. It averages the heat between both sides. IMO if your relying soloy on a analog gauge you not getting a true reading. Wat you could do to varify wat your heat is . Borrow a heat gun and shoot the engine in different areas on the engine.this would give you a better ideal of your heat.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
I questioned the same thing, but a perimeter?? Or whatever its called measures the same as gauge, so that was pretty good confirmation…. Plus alarms has sounded if I dont shut it down. My question is about the impeller and housing, Ive eliminated all else.
A water pump is relatively cheap. In my 30 yrs of owning a boat Ive never had to change a impeller housing these have a stainless sleeve in them. Im kinda funny about changing water pumps. I change yearly. Regardless of usage. Its cheap insurance and peace of mind. Wat would it hurt drop the foot put a pump in. Inspect the housing . Less than 50 bucks and a little time. Cheap compared to the cost of a rebuild or new repower.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
If you know where the thermocouple is where the water temp gauge gets its reading, and its removable, you can drop it in boiling water and see if you are getting an accurate read on your gauge. Boiling water will be 212 degrees. After that,it changes state to gas.
True Red….. In the process now of changing EVERYTHING in the lower end including impeller of course, housing, seals etc. Ive just assumed that since its peeing good… All that stuff must still be good and seeing its not even a year old…. ??? Was wondering if anybody had had a water pump still good enough to circulate and pee, but not good enough to keep it cool. I thought the whole purpose of the “Pee Hole” was to show that it was working properly??? Is this not nessecarily true??? I guess my biggest fear now is: that its got a cracked head or something major? Being a half way descent auto mechanic, and clueless to outboard motors, I always think in terms of auto engine trouble shooting, and I could be over thinking a simple fix as head cracks and such??
Coming from a old merc. I always performed my own maintance. The thing from my experience is it can be peeing and still have a blockage somewhere. Most often in a head. It could have sand, mud and even a small chunk of wood in one of the passage ports. This is why I never rely soloy on the peeing port. It only shows the pump is pumping.then there again the water pressure gauge shows how much pressure u have.then your temp gauge show if its circulating the water enough to keep the engine cool. Cracked head IMO not likely. But a slight blockage might be something looking into.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
Thanks Redngoo!! I like you “IMO thought” about not being a head. Gives me hope anyway… A authorized Mercury mech. has it now, and just put a 400.00 Oil Alarm module back on, after some goofball mechanic took it off saying it didnt need it??? Smh, and this current mechanic seems to think the impeller or something down there is the problem…. He did say that “this thing is strong though”This motor and the boat has very very low hours… Im just hoping and praying I aint done screwed something up. I personally did change the poppit valve during this process, and you have to almost chisel the plastic bushing out of the block, and I cant promise a piece of that bushing didnt fall back into the area behind it, out of reach, BUT the heating problem was present before that.
New impeller, housing and gaskets installed. Temps improved some, but very little, but still in 170ish range. Mechanic said he was jerking heads off now……NOW Im getting nervous. From a auto mechanic standpoint…. Jerking heads off is NEVER a good thing!!!! :X maybe I should have took up golf….. Sigh!!!
Blown Head gasket causing water to escape and run out the exhaust…. UgghhhhI better get on them Honey-dos fast!!!
