97 Jaguar – Fuel Tank

I have a question about my boat. Ive had my boat out quite a few times this year and it has been running great. But yesterday while I was out, I switched the fuel tanks from the left side to the right side because the left tank was almost empty. And when I started the engine, the engine light/alarm on the dash went off and the engine quit. So I switched the tank back over to the left side, started the engine and it ran perfect. What could cause this to happen? Could it be a bad fuel line or fuel pump on the right side tank? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jesse

I am having basically the same problem with my Puma but, it is when I shift from the front tank to the rear tanks. I believe that you and I both may have an air leak. I keep my boat in a stall about 2 hours from my home. Then next time I go I am going to check the fuel hose at the tanks themselves. You might try the same.Check and see if you can pump up your squeeze bulb from either tank configuration.

We are suspect that it is picking up air in the pick up tube in the tank. They can split and suck air, and require replacement. Try removing a line and verifying this. It is obviously fuel delivery from the one tank, which means it is either the line or pickup. Process of Elimination!

It could be that you have water in that tank. Mercurys have a fuel filter that has a water alarm in the bottom that will cause the light to come on, sometimes the alarm horn sounds and if it is bad enough it will shut down the engine. Thats where I would look first. Most of the filters are on the left side of the motor and you can either clean them or replace it. Johnny

If there were water getting to the fuel filter, the contaminant would be in the filter even if you changed tanks.

If there is fuel in the line it should pick up.

Thanks for the info guys, I worked on my boat a little bit last night and I noticed that when I switched the tank to the right side, the primer ball went flat. So I worked on it for a few minutes and I finally got it to prime. Im guessing there must have been air in the fuel line? It seems like its getting fuel now from both tanks, Im taking it out on Saturday so Ill let you guys know how things go. Thanks again, Jesse
