My 1998 PII came with a Brute 24/36 Motorguide motor, I since changed it over to a Motorguide Tour 24V TBRF82, and disconnected the White Cable from the main motor battery ( I have been running several rebuilds and new lowers for the last 10 yrs to include a new lower this spring), Im now going to change it to a Motorguide Xi5 36V 105 FW wireless pedal with pinpoing GPS which is sitting in my Family Room ( yes I am single LOL) . I am still using the orignal STYLE 4 Prong Marinco on the boat that has been replaced in the last year or so. Question is do I need to add a 4 battery ? Can I go back to the old wiring, I cant recall if the Brute had 3 leads but I think it did, The new motor olny has two leads on it Red and Black, . How would I wire the unit if I dont need a 4 Battery .. at the Plug ?I think there were Three wires at the Female side before I went to just 24v and disconnected the White Cable ( at the front and rear of the boat to main battery)…. Red, White, and Black.. I also believe there is a Jumper in the Male side of this connector but that I believe was to switch from 24 to 36 v …. I also do not remember a Jumper from the 2 Trolling motor batteries from the Positive side of battery 2 back over to the Neg side of the Main.. Added Info I have on-board a Dual Pro. Pro Series 3 Bank 15 amp Charger with a Dual Pro Charge on the Run plus external LED Status Bar. Mildly Confused
Mildly Confused, if you like you can call me @806-433-8828, Ive been running a 36v motor for many years on a PII, I think it would be easier to explain over the phone.
What would be the best time to call… I think I understand how to hook them up in series with only 3 Batteries in the Boat Trolling Motor Battery 1 Neg. to Trolling Motor- Pos of Battery 1 to Main Battery 2 Neg. with Jumper Pos of Main Battery 2 to Neg of Trolling Motor Battery 3 with Jumper and Pos of Battery 3 to Trolling motor 60 amp Circuit Breaker in Positive Cable going to Trolling Motor Question/Concerns are What is the best path to put the Main Battery in as above or as Battery 1 or 3 or does it matter for Electronics. I am running 10″ HDS Gen 2 Console 8″ HDS 2 Front and Gen 2 HD Structure Scan plus now with this new Motor Pinpoint GPS Should there be any breakers in the jumper Circuit Wired like this will eliminate jumping the main battery if it goes dead (never had the main go dead so far) from a Trolling motor Battery without removing a Jumper. or having a disconnect in the Jumper Line. Putting a 4th Battery in a 98 PII would be fun and I would issues with my Dual Pro charge on the run system
You only need two leads going to the front for 36V. You have those two leads in place now with the 24V motor. You will wire the plug on the Xi5 just like the 24V is wired. At the batteries, if you use the cranking battery as the third battery (I dont recommend this, but quite a few do it) it will wire as follows:Neg of trolling motor to neg of crankingPositive of cranking will jump to TM battery 1 negativepositive of TM battery 1 will jump to TM battery 2 negativiepositive of TM battery 2 to breaker, then to trolling motorHope this helpsBTW, if you dont connect the TM negative to the same terminal the outboard neg is connected to, electrolysis will occur. Even at this, using the three battery system can cause interference on the depth finders, not to mention preliminary discharge of the cranking battery.JohnJones Trolling Motor Services870 773 3474Motorguide/MinnKota/PowerPole/Lowrance/Humminbird
Thanks John I just recently installed the new Tour Lower Motor Unit and Lower Shaft that I purchased from you and all was working fine but I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity of this Xi5. I will wire it up as you suggest for the 3 battery system and see how things are.. Electronics are very important to me so we will see… Installing a fourth battery in my 1998 PII will take some effort and it will add a change to my Charging System Set up.. More so to the charge on the Run if I add a 4th It set up for a 3 battery system, when the Outboard is running and the main Battery is fully Charged switches over to charge the 2 trolling motor batteries charging only 2 of the three TM batteries may make it become useless. Plus another charger will be needed for the Fourth battery or a complete new set up ouch I have big bucks in what I have now. Gees right now I am running 3-31series AGM Batteries that aren’t light I removed the 3 bank charger off the rear transom to transfer weight forward but she a heavy beast back there.
