That 97 I bought has a 99 Optimax with 82 hours on it. Well it died on my Sunday and they cant figure out whats wrong. These guys working on it are Mercury Certified and one is already saying new power head. That sucks because I dont have 6700 dollars to spend on it. So to recap I bought a boat on Friday for 10k. Ran it at the lake Sunday for about 45 minutes and it died. Took it in on Monday for them to look at. Now its Wednesday and they are saying it needs 6700 in repairs. Anyone guess whos wife is freaking out? They told me that they checked this motor over and gave it a clean bill of health on Friday when i bought it. Not sure what I am going to do know. But I do still love that Cat even with the bad motor. Looks fast in the driveway and maybe I can put it in the pond I fish and still get some use out of her while I save up for a new motor.
Man I sure feel for you. I know that era of Optimax engines has a track history of being very unreliable. I think it was 99-01 maybe? I realize that doesnt make you feel any better though. Hope you can work something out. Maybe take it to another Merc dealer?
We would try to first determine what cylinder is out, and what the issue is. Have a cylinder compression test done and see what is up, plus did they do a compression check before you purchased it. On older Opti engines BCB has suggested even running a little extra oil in them to keep them alive, and they suggest this for older OMC product also. Figure out the issue and see what your options are. Then we will get a little direction for you. We understand the freiking out part and we understand why she would… Hope this all works out for you and let us know what you find.
Dont spend a dime until you know for sure what it is. Did you buy the boat from a dealer?
Yes it came from a dealer. They did a compresson test and all is/was well. Mid 90s across all 6. I am going to go pick it up after work tomorrow. It cost me 300.00 for them to tell me its junk and I am out of cash now. Single income in a family of four so it will be a while before I can save up enough cash to get it checked out someplace else. I have been fixing my own cars and trucks so maybe I will try and figure out how to fix my own boat.
Man, i feel for you. I know its an older boat but did the dealer give you any type of warranty?I know things happen, but to blow a powerhead your first time out seems a little odd. I would go back to the dealer you bought the boat from and talk to them.
Where are you located that may be of some help in ithers beginning to help you out either with some tips or possibly giving you a hand in diagnosing the problem itself. What exactly is the the motor doing? Does it turn over? Is it locked up? Try removing the spark plugs and inspecting them, once the plugs are removed try to spin the flywheel to determine if it is locked up, since you have compression tested on the cylinders and they say there all at 90 doenst sound like it is locked up but doesnt sound like a blown p-head either. Since this engine only has 82 hours on i will say those numbers do sound a little low but they are across the board so maybe not for that year model. Or were these numbers before you bought the boat? Also you can find used complete motors in that year range for cheaper then a new powerhead. The more info you can give on what the motor is or isnt doing the better folks can help you.
Well I had it out on the lake and we got ready to head in. It was warm because we had moved to a couple different spots that evening. I ran it about 1800 rpms for a bit and then opend it up. It hit 3000 rpms and died. After that it would restart but the you tried to go it wouild die. You could rev it in nutral but i didnt take it past about 1500. As soon as you put it back in gear and tried to take off it would die. After about the 3d or 4th time it died and wouldnt restart. The same dealer that sold me the boat is telling me its bad.
