The bass fishing is tough on both rivers. Lots of small fish, but every now and then some body will get a nice stringer. 11 to 12 pounds for a five fish limit will put you in the running for a tournament win. As far as fish kills, the menhaden die off every summer at about this time. The wind will blow them into shallow water, and there are so many menhaden that they will deplete the oxygen. Plus the water is hot. high 80s to low 90s in the shallows. All that stuff happens down river from New Bern, between New Bern and Cherry Point. The river is full of puppy drum(red fish), stripers, and speckled trout. I think the problem with the bass fishing is salt water intrusion. I see barnacles on wood way up both rivers.
