I use a 76″ Medium Heavy Vertas fast action rod and a 6:4:1 Lews reel and it works great for me. May not be the best but its what I like

U want an 8 er rated for upto 3 ounces if youre goin deep. Lews makes one, loomis, st croix- all dedicated arig rods. You get one too short or too stiff you cant throw it.C.O.D. Jr. III

Denali makes a 711″ extra heavy jadewood specifically for the A rig. Been throwing it for a year and it took a lot of fatigue out of throwing that “school of shad”

I use an old (not expensive) 7ft flipin stick with a 5500c3 spooled with 60 lb braid. I have been told the rig will break a rod and not to use an expensive one. Then get some Ben-gay for your arms and shoulders.

I also use the 76″ Medium Heavy Veritas (not the Heavy!) along with the Lews Tournament reel. The Lews Tournament in 6.4 has brass gears, its a little heavier than the Tournament Pro but will hold up to the abuse of an A-rig. The rod retails for about $95 and the real $150, wait for a sale or use your Christmas gift cards and youll do better!! Ive caught a lot of fish on this combo and thrown both heavy and light set ups with no problems.

Reel not so important although I do prefer a reel with a fine tune dial on the side it really lets you dial it in in windy condition. Rod however is everything I 2nd the Denali rods they have just the right amount of stiff mid & butt section with a fast tip. A fast tip is important allows the rod to load and propell the heavy rigs. I throw a seven wire with 12 willow blades and a 5 wire with 8 dummies allot and these rods do great with them. The jade wood is around $99 http://www.denalirods.com/jadewoodflippinrod-1.aspx I throw the Rosewood which is a little more expensive mid 100s but I like the feel of this rod better R955FX. If you buy the correct rod a small roll cast should propell the bait as far as your reel will allow with just a motion of the wrist. Hope this helps

I throw mine on a 76″ bps pro qualifier flipping stick that I bought on clearance with a ardent reel that I also bought on clearance. Its a lot of bait so you need a stout setup! I dont think you have to have the most sensitive rod because when They hit this thing you will know it! Its like a tanker truck hit your bait.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
