i have a 09 optimax. been running the merc oil DFI. has anyone tried the ams”s oil or any other brand with luck
I think ams oil is awesome I also asked the same question you did just a few weeks ago. The overwhelming response was if you are under warranty you should run your manifactureres recommended lubricant. If you are not you should check to see if your engine is set up to run on pure synthetic or a blend in some cases it does matter. I hope this helps you.
LONG TIME Amsoil fan here, that being said your owners manual should call for DFI oil or another TCWIII rated oil. Amsoil says they will warrant an oil related failure. Have fun proving that one. Here is a list of the TCW III rated oils right now. http://www.nmma.org/certification/certi … tc-w3.aspxI still use Amsoil in several applications, my outboard lube points yes, my outboard oil tank no. Your outboard your choice.
bc4life,I agree with what John says about proving the oil failed. If your motor is still under warranty, Id stick with what Mercury recommends. If it is out of warranty, it doesnt matter because any engine failure falls to you. Im probably safe in saying Mercury doesnt have any oil refineries, etc. but if Im wrong, I apologize. Someone is making Mercurys oil and it could very well be Amsoil – both companies are located in Wisconsin. My Mercury motor is out of warranty and Ive been using Amsoil synthetic oil in the lower gear case and oil injection HP Amsoil for my engine. I burn the highest octaine fuel I can buy, usually 91-93 – no ethanol. Im able to scope my engine every year. The boat and motor was four years old when I purchased them. The cylinder and cylinder walls look better than when I purchased the boat. Ive noticed where the engine exhausts through the prop, was very black when I got the boat. AFter a few runs using the Amsoil, that portion of the prop is clean. There are a lot of good oils on the market. Ive used several in my off-road vehicle and racing engines. Ive been with Amsoil for a number of years and havent had any problems. Best of luck
I agree with all others on warranty, but lets talk about scenarios! What if ford or chevy said you can only use our oil and no one elses oil or your warranty is void? Sounds like BS!
Actually, Merc oil is made by Citgo corporation. That lil old business based out of Venezuela…………………There have been several discussions about the oils over the years. I run an EFI engine, so my opinion (I prefer Pennzoil Premium Plus) doesnt count. If you have warranty, stick with the manufacturers recommendation(which to me smacks of kickbacks and such). Mercury JUST RECENTLY posted that they are changing their recommendations from Premium Plus in their DFI engines to specifically their DFI oil. They say you can still use PP oil as acceptable but the “preferred” recommendation has changed.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
My Merc dealer said the same thing about Merc changing recommended oil to the DFI. I was already using it.

They dont say you must use only our oil, they say our oil or a TCWIII rated oil. Your vehicle calls for a certain API oil certification to maintain its warranty as well. If Amsoil would ever pay for the TCW certification I may go to it in my outboard as well. Until then my five year warranty isnt worth the risk to me.
