Let me preface this by saying that I couldnt tell you the last time I used an anchor in my boat. Now that my kids are fishing with me more and more I see the need for an anchor in the boat. What type of anchor and what weight should I be looking to get?
I fished with a guide at Lake Fork a few years ago, Kerry Stafford. I watched him anchor occasionally. I too, have had need of an anchor from time to time. Probably the most popular is the Mushroom style anchors. I used to keep two 10# and use one at each end…the only problem was, they were not heavy enough in my opinion. I would go at least 15# per anchor. There are other styles that other fishermen may use with better success. I am not familiar with those. On a lighter note…the anchor I use now, is my favorite, my dads “home made” anchor. He took an old half gallon can(like orange juice used to be canned in), filled with concrete and had an eye bolt out of one end. Then, he wired an old window weight (from the old style door with transom window in older houses), to the eye bolt. Not a very nice looking weight, probably not practical to most anglers, but from where I sit, its the best one ever made! It has lasted 50+ years and built by my dad…96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
I have the same issue with kids and the need to anchor from time to time. I bought the 15lb rubber coated Navy anchor from Academy. It works great and the rubber coating protects the boat should I get careless when dragging it over the side. I have the Pantera Classic and have anchored in 25-30mph winds and it held fine.
here is a link for a company thet makes one of the best i have found, they also started carrying them at academy or you can order online. http://www.mightymiteanchors.com/
Im an offshore boat captain and we anchor often but with a little more weight involved. In my opinion and in my use, the mushroom style is useless unless you are anchoring shallow and in a cove. My suggestion is the fluke style anchor, you always pay out your line 3 times the depth and you dont have to worry about dragging. When you heave anchor, you heave in until it wont come anymore then maneuver past it and it will come right up.
For just crappie fishing and such, get a mushroom anchor. Otherwise the Fluke or Danforth anchors are the way to go for serious uses.
Thanks for the inputs, any suggestions for prefered weights. I have a Sabre FTD if it makes any difference.
I use a 15# vinyl-coated anchor. Use it when fishing with young kids and want to stay in the same spot, or sometimes when fishing for striped bass that are mainly feeding on a hump in the river. I dont like the idea of two anchors, as I once watched an idiot toss two out below Lay Dam in the tail-race at lake Mitchell. The turbines came on, the rear anchor caught, and the boat sank as water washed up over the transom which was cleverly facing up-stream because of the rear anchor. The boat re-surfaced after the water flow stopped later, thanks to the foam floatation. I fish up there every now and then, and have been known to anchor from the bow eye, but I always have a knife handy if things start to go bad, although with the bow upstream the problems are not so likely.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
OT57 is right about rivers. While I have used two anchors, it has always been on lakes and like BCB pointed out, mainly for crappie/bream. Occasionally in the shallows when fishing for bass as well. I have always used the cleats to hold in place. I too have heard of boats going down by anchoring both ends in moving water. Basically comes down to the purpose of anchoring…. My dads anchor stays in the boat as a reminder of all the times we spent fishing as a family….whether I use it or not.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
That is _exactly_ where my 15# vinyl anchor came from. My dad used his boat in a very small reservoir in either Waynesboro, MS (Maynor Creek park) or Sand Hill, MS (Turkey Fork). So no current. He primarily fished with live bait for crappie, bream, catfish or bass. Didnt matter what he caught as he would eat em all (out of that group, did not include gar, etc. ) I could not part with the anchor, I had thrown it overboard and retrieved it so many times over the years, as had he and my mom.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
