I fish off shore or dirt shallow in heavy grass ( the kind of stuff the big motor has trouble with ) , how is the Ultrex holding up in the grass ?How is the extra weight affecting performance ? I would love to here experiences in the grass !
Works great in grass. The extra weight does not seem to bother my Jag. Whatever little speed you might give up is worth it. Id lighten up some of my tackle before Id give up the ultrex.
Ive heard of quite a few with broken shafts. I feel it will be priceless in open water and stump free lakes. I just dont see it holding up in stumpy lakes and rivers.
They might have broken a few shafts and weve heard that from some, though weve only run onto one person whos popped a shaft, and a whole lot more that indicate theyve heard of it. We think one broken shaft might expand itself to many rumors. Each person told about one shaft becomes multiple shafts when described by those who were told about… One shaft.
I think we will continue to hear and see quite a few broken shafts until minn Kota develops some sort of breakaway system. I know of four personally. I have been on the fence since its conception. I have first hand experience with the ultrex I just dont feel its gonna hold up in shallow stumpy water. No doubt it will have its place.
Sounds like its had a few growing pains ! How is the steering working in the grass ? I can see why the offshore guys are fired up .
Broken Shafts — Use Ive seen them. Ive also seen broken shafts in Fortrex, Maxxum, Edge, Terrova, and Power drive. The Terrova and Power drive doesnt have a breakaway and I dont see any more broke shafts in them then I do Fortrex and Maxxum. I personally dont think the broke shafts in the Ultrex is an Ultrex problem — it is something that happens from time to time with MinnKotas. When you look at the Fortrex/Maxxum with the break a way, they both have a upper shaft that comes down to within 16 to 18″ of the lower unit, giving that amount to “flex” when something is hit before it breaks a way. Look at the Ultrex and it doesnt have the upper shaft, it has about 24″ of shaft that comes out of the transmission giving more shaft to flex — like the Terrova. You wont see the Ultrex bending the upper shaft making the steering not operational.JohnJones Trolling Motor Services870 773 3474Motorguide/MinnKota/PowerPole/Lowrance/Humminbird
I am rough on trolling motors to say the least, I also do all my own repairs. I purchase my parts from nife in Little Rock, I am a preferred customer. Gary just shakes his head when I walk in. Asks, what have you broke now? But anyways, I have had maxxums since I can remember and even with the breakaways, I am good for at least replacing one shaft a year sometimes 2. I am very proficient in changing them, sometimes I replace up to 2 armatures a year. I have had to replace the upper shaft a few times as well. I said all that to say this, Any of the trolling motors on the market no matter the brand, if you are power fishing shallow stumpy log filled Lakes are subject to busted shafts in the case of Minn Kota and bent or busted shafts in the case of motor guide. I had a tour edition MG with the gator mount. that I had gotten good at taking it off on the water to lay it on the front deck just so I could jump on it to try and get some of the bend out of the shaft so I could continue fishing.

Im pretty good at tearing stuff up myself. My wife told me dont even think about installing it yourself, itll be much cheaper to pay someone who knows what they are doing.
