I have a Mercury 150 XRi (EFI) on my Pantera II and it has been acting up on me. It will start and idle but when you take off it will suddenly cut off. It has not been puttering around or struggling it just stops. Any ideas of where to start troubleshooting?
Two things come to mind, based on similar problems we had w/ an old evinrude:Power PackClogged Fuel Filter13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods
Just a thought put Id also check the fuel pickup in the gas tank. Do you have dual tanks and does it die when using either tank? You can also hook up an external tank and try it,if it still dies then you know you are looking at an engine issue.
That will be tough to figure without luck in changing parts I would take to mexhanic and let them handle.it. could be either fuel or ignition. If you cant resist , start with fuel lines and make sire theyre up to date.
Ethanol fuel and lines, fuel filter and fuel pump.
I once had similar problem. My Merc. 150 would idle, but when I would shower down for takeoff, it would just die out. I tried new gas, new plugs, etc. Long story short, the internal check valve in the primer bulb had come apart and when I would hammer on it, it would suck the check valve up and shut off the fuel. It is worth a look at.
I would start simple first. Prime the bulb and make sure you get good pressure. If that doesnt work, then go down the route of checking and replacing parts.
If you run the motor on a borrowed, portable fuel tank you can easily diagnose a fuel supply problem originating before the motor. If you do have old (pre-ethanol) lines that have deteriorated, they should all be replaced AND the motor fuel system should be thoroughly rebuilt (carbs, filters, fuel pump) because parts of the fuel lines are likely in that entire system. Remember, dirt in the fuel system can result in a lean running cylinder and POP goes the power head!
Hey guys I had a buddy help me diagnose the issue. Basically the negative wire going to the fuel pump had a connector that was loose and this caused the resistance to go up and pull more amps. This caused the wire to get hot and cause the female end of the plug to become open and kill the connection. To fix this I cut off the bad connector and installed a new one. I then hooked it up to the hose and let it run about 1000 rpms for 30 mins to test and it was successful. Thought this might be helpful incase anyone else has issues. Below is the picture of the wire burning up due to the loose connection.Last edited by jlyalls on July 24th, 2015, 4:36 pm, edited 2 times in total.
Well bad news for me again. For some reason the engine is still cutting off after a while on the lake. I have checked the amperage from the fuel pump at 1500 rpm on the hose and it reads avg 2.8amps. I am somewhat confused. I can mess with the new connector going to the negative terminal on the fule pump and its like it is getting loose again and I can squeeze it with pliers and it starts back up for a little bit. I also noticed that my battery is no longer charging. I am curious if the stator or one of the regulators could be causing issues. Anyone have any tips on where and how to troubleshoot this? I have a fluke meter to test with but I am not familiar with checking a stator or a voltage regulator. Thanks ahead for the replies and if you need more information I will gladly let you know. Troubleshooting so far…Motor is a 1995 Mercury Black Max XRI and is Fuel injected. I have cleaned the battery terminals and re crimped all the connections to the starting battery.Made new connection to neg terminal on fuel pumpFuel pump reads -2.8 amps at 1500 RPMBattery Not charging when motor is running
