Looking for any pics of a spare tire carrier mounted on the side of trailer. Also any info about the carrier, where purchased etc… reason being is I have a 2010 Sabre ftd with a hambys and upgrade wheels and tires (rocca/cooper). Unfortunately this combo only left at most 1/2 inch between the spare tire and the hambys keel protector. This is not enough room to clear the spare when loading/unloading. I dont think it should have been this close as i have seen plenty of sabres w/ and w/o keel protectors and they have much more clearance than this one. My only option now is to just take the spare off and put it in the bed of my truck and I investigate way to many theft reports at my day job to do this and think it will be there very long. Any help would be appreciated.. BTW i have contacted BCB who is supposed to be building some sort of roller bracket to mount to trailer and flush to hull to keep it from dropping down but I havent received it yet and I dont know how keen I am on mounting something that will have constant contact with the hull like that but we will see.
This pic shows mine, I bought a rack from local dealer, I think an “R” rack, it is lined up with fender, I have a flexible lock wrapped around the spare and mount. Hope this gives you an idea- this is mounted on an 06 Cougar, after three blowouts.http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp11 … 1278522545BAYOU BANDIT
Thanks for the picture. I have a single axle trailer due to garage problems so the trailer turns in pretty quick after the front of the fender but that is prob the only option. Is your carrier bolted through he trailer or does it use the u-bolt style mounting system?
We can build a side mounted rack, though the clearances you suggest are tighter than we know of and the Sabre trailer has not ever changed on the build sheet.
Min is u-bolted, but a rack could be built to extend out enough to allow use.BAYOU BANDIT
thanks for the reply,Its tighter than i have ever seen as well and this is my 3rd basscat and the other 2 (06 p-classic and a 06 P4) had plenty. I can certainly send you pictures if you give me an email address. I sent pics to Pete who showed them to a trailer supervisor. The reply was that they had only seen that a couple of other times? Thats where the idea for some sort of roller would be built and sent for me to drill and bolt to the trailer flush to the hull so it wouldnt drop down. To be honest i wasnt real keen on this idea because of the constant contact when loading/unloading but that was a few weeks ago and it hasnt arrived. I would really prefer to keep the spare where it was designed to be as it looks best there but it just wont work. I just cant imagine that the hambys took up that much room? It was factory installed so im sure its put on properly. It looks to me like either the spare cradle is welded on to shallow or the boat itself is sitting to low on the bunks or bow stop. Im at a loss as what to do at this point so any help is appreciated. The side mount is a thought but then it starts to rub the paint and gatorhyde then rust begins which is why i would prefer to find some way to keep the factory spare position. Thanks
The first time you have a flat and its 32 deg, raining and on a muddy side of the road and you have to get on your back to get the spare off, then youll say should have listened to ole SAM- been there done that.BAYOU BANDIT
I had the same problem with my 09 Sabre.I dont have a keel protector and it hit the spare everytime. It messed up the rim of the spare and Pops Marine supposedly sent pics to BCB.I just put a spare in the back of my SUV and said to heck with it.I heard I was suppose to get a roller too but I never saw one.I dont think it would have worked anyway because of where you would have to mount it.
Yeah, Im not sure what is going on with the clearance problem. I cant get a number 2 pencil between the hambys and the spare tire. Whats odd is that some look like they have 3-4 inches and some look like almost none like mine. That tells me that if the same jigs are used for the trailers then something is either being warped in the process or somebody somewhere is using a different measurement than what is called for. The only true fix i can see at this point is to make the spare tire rack lower (deeper). This would require cutting it off and re-welding, painting, etc. And I am not doing that myself even if i could. If i was closer to the factory I would take it by and have them look at it but Im 600 miles one way from Texas. The rest of the boat is perfect as always so this is just frustrating me.
LB1202,I could not lower my bracket cause the trailer scrapes going in and out of my driveway and its not steep.Does your trolling motor bracket hit when unloading?Mine hits hard,,MG72 Gator Mount. No matter how fast or slow I back in it hits. The last three boats I have had its been trailer issues,no motor problems just trailer.
I was at Academy today and they had the mount and roller!!BAYOU BANDIT
Dang, thought Id get an ATTABOY on this one!BAYOU BANDIT
Thanks to both of you for the pics and the help.I have spoken with Pete (BCB) they made a wide roller and painted it to match. They are also supposed to send a rubber spacer of unknown size to possibly prop the front of the tire on to maybe give more clearance such as on Largemouths. I will try the rubber mount first and see what that does, not sure if the tandem trailer like LM as opposed to my single will make a difference but I will try it. Thanks again for the responses!
