Topic: Automatic Bilge Pump?

I purchased an 06 Pantera Classic a few months ago and Ive noticed that if I turn the bilge on to “automatic” it runs constantly even if theres no water in the bilge. So it doesnt seem very “automatic” so there must be something wrong?Is there something I can do/check with the pump to get it to work properly or does it need to be replaced?Thanks, Greg

Greg,There should be a float switch connected to the pump. Check to ensure that it is not stuck in the up position or that something is not holding the float up turning the pump on.Scott

Thanks Scott,Dumb question, but Ive never worked on a boats bilge pump system before and Im at work so I cant look for myself right now. Is the float switch internal to the pump mechanism? If so Id have to remove the pump and/or dissasemble it to check the switch?Or is it outside the pump?Greg

It is a separate float assembly.

I guess that explains why the bilge pump is not automatic. There is NO external float ball/switch attached to the pump. I wonder how that happened? I guess the guy who owned the boat before me could have redone the system and left that out?I guess I need to figure out how to add one… or maybe replace the pump with one that has a float switch built in?

Not necessarily as not all boats came with the auto switch back then. We are not sure which models did not.

It is a part they have and could easily sell. Though they do not commonly go bad, thus they are not listed. Pretty reliable part.
