I had the unique opportunity to work the National Guard FLW Texas Collegiate Championship this week. I was one of the in-boat “officials/observers”; and I can honestly say, that with the level of desire, competition, camaraderie, and sportsmanship exhibited by the qualified teams; the future of the sport of bass fishing is very bright! (and us older folks need to look out! there are some big sticks a-comin!). B.A.S.S. and FLW are to be commended for promoting bass tournament fishing at the college level.I rode with teams from Oklahoma, LSU and Lamar; each team was impressive in their approach to this tournament, on a lake that was at 50% capacity and 10 low. Most locals thought that 12-14 pounds a day would win………the SFA team stoked a three day total of 62.6 pounds; with 26.6 coming in the final day! Texas A&M team 2 was second at 52.11; and they had big bass of the tournament at well over 9 pounds.I had never been an observer in a tournament; have fished in numerous tournaments through the years with an observer though. It was an extremely pleasurable experience and I encourage anyone to volunteer to be an observer in one of the college events if the opportunity should arise. These kids are awesome!
