Got my Cat back today. New p-head (21 days later- way better than bucks results), only took 44 gal fuel and 2 gal oil to break in the 250 pro xs, 120 minute double oil, no trim on motor etc, not to mention this is the second time in less than 6 months! Lets see 44 gal x $1.85 plus 2 Gal oil @ $27.00= smokin puma “PRICELESS” ..Dont you love a warranty?
It could have been last year when gas was at 3.85 a gallon
I seriously hope both of you the best of luck, and hopefully your pains are behind you…..Just because I sell them from time to time, what happened? was is cylinder #5? I rememeber when their was a oiling problem or something there….Im used to hearing about My Etecs popping cylinder # 2, but its been a while……Once again hope you guys have a great season, do you guys run Premium plus or DFI oil? BrannonYour Signature …
My service order says ” #3 & #5 cyls blown”. I started w/PP but my guys said to run DFI and no problem mixing… Is this correct? What does your shop prefer? I have been told both meet warranty but DFI was better for the 225-250.
Mercury reccommends the Premium Plus for the Pro XS engines. I dont know anyone running the DFI oil in a Pro XS. D.
dbasket you had me worried , so I went and looked it up..DFI is now the preffered see this link http://www.mercurymarine….cts/maintenance/dfi.php. This is what the local pro-staffers told me.
try this OPTIMAX/DFI 2-CYCLE OUTBOARD OIL A synthetic blend 2-Cycle engine oil specifically formulated and developed to meet the needs of: OptiMax and Direct Fuel Injected (DFI) 2-cycle outboard engines. Provides the maximum protection for OptiMax and DFI engines even under the most extreme operating conditions. Outperforms other oils by combining a carefully modified base stock blend with a synthetic additive package. Minimizes carbon build-up to help maintain engine top end speed and acceleration. Superior lubrication for increased resistance to piston scuffing. Will mix with typical 2-cycle engine oils. Provides warranty protection for Mercury and Mariner OptiMax and DFI outboards. Available container sizes: Pint, Quart, Gallon, 2.5 Gallon, 55 Gallon From the Mercury web site.
Any chance your dealer told you why your powerhead blew…Id sure like to know what caused it….hate to see you get a new Phead and not have the issue diagnosed. I would assume it got hot or had an oiling issue…dont see why a new powerhead would fail for no reason.
Clintb, the service manager was a real talkative guy and did say he ran all the data: right and left side block temp sensors, engine temp at shut down, oil flow, gas flow, overspeed (time in rev limiter), engine idle time, oil sample, overall apearance of motor and lower unit, lower unit inspection, air compressor operation stats…. blah blah.. says he has NO clue what could have been the cause. Merc did not require any further info to approve the warranty. He did request the report from Mercs Q/C analysis when p-head is checked at factory but I doubt I will ever hear the real result! Just Thankfull to have her back to fish the BASS Weekend series this weekend at Lake Gaston.
heres another one from Bassnedge.com “OptiMax/DFI 2-Cycle Oil surpasses the performance of the Mercury Premium Plus formulation renowned as the benchmark by which all others are judged,” said Don Schultz, Manager of Fuel and Lubricants at Mercury and Chairman of the NMMA Oil Certification Committee.
