Backwashing livewell spray bars

I watched Kevin Shorts video on backwashing spraybars and finally got around to do it today.I played around with it some and it appears one of the ball valves is for the recycle spraybars and the other ball valve for the aerator spraybars – correct?The recycle ball valve (starboard side) has a fair flow but the aerator ball valve (port side) just has a trickle.I also noticed my aerator spraybars dont flow very well…about half of the holes has flow…nothing like what was in Kevins video.So I figure the aerator spraybars are clogged. Another thing is when I turn the aerator on it takes about 5-10 seconds to start pumping but I figured it was just getting primed.What things should I check out? Could I take the screen off the inlet and jet water up it with the garden hose? Would that hurt the pump?Last edited by 1958 on January 12th, 2013, 11:49 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Im just a stupid redneck doctor but if u go hose to valve you shouldnt hurt anything. Most.will come out spraybars. Probably though u outta pull cartridges and shoot it into sump with plug of boat pulled- that way if you have sucked in some sort of funk bomb itll come out pump housing. And then like the alien from “Alien”, itll run off somewhere.C.O.D. Jr. III

Dwayne – where boilerfish said is where I saw it.Ward – Ill look for aliens. I see 3 pumps. Two have what looks like a cartridge to take off and one looks solid in there. One of the pumps with cartridge is for auto bildge.Seems like ther should be another pump…?

I believe its bilge, recirc, and aerator. I have mine labelled ontop so I can pull them quickly but cant recall the arrangement. Kick your aerator on and see which one is making racket.C.O.D. Jr. III

Hey I found two more pumps under the oil tank that should be bilge.I traced the one pump to upper spray bars which is aerator.So it looks like you just twist the handle to unlock it. Mine seems stuck or I need to work out more. But Ill get it and try your thing.Thanks

There is usually a small black “arm” that locks into place on the top of the cartridge. I got my backwashing to flow out of the valves and works good now. Great system but I would like to understand the hydraulics of the system.In the video Kevin says “you are pumping water through the spraybar”. Is it creating a syphon and air is being pulled backwards through the spraybar outlet holes? Would it be best to have the livewells full of water so they cover the spraybars then?Thanks
