This past Wednesday I had a problem with my 2005 225 Mercury and I’m wondering if it’s a case of bad gas or something more serious . When we took off after putting the boat in it ran fine and after fishing our first spot for a while . Moved a few times and the motor ran fine . Then after fishing one spot for while when I gave it gas to get on plane the motor seemed to bog down ,couldn’t get over 2000 RPM .Checked to see if there was maybe weeds wrapped around the prop but it was fine . So gave it gas again ,repeat performance then after maybe 3 minutes of having the hotfoot pressed to the floor the RPM began to gain and slowly the boat came out of the hole and ran fine . Decided to check if it would happen again I came off of plane and let the boat sit for about 30 seconds then punched it ,no problem boat came right out of the hole . However when we shut down to fish for a while the next time we decided to move again couldn’t get any RPM out of the motor and it seemed to be bogging down for few minutes then again it slowly increased RPM . This happened several more times during the day . The only time it didn’t happen is when I had to idle out of no wake zone for about 5 minutes then the boat came right up no bogging . My question is this . Do I have some bad gas or is this something more serious ? I had the motor tuned up this spring new plugs and filters . Also I put fresh gas plus quick clean in the tank the day before . Any help would be appreciated I have 2005 Puma
TPI can be an issue on 225 EFI engines and the fuel is also a suspect if you have net checked the fuel lines and fuel filter we would. On this engine there is not a coil issue that is regular, and usually not on an older one.
E-10 may have eaten away at your fuel lines and put deposits into the fuel system. Something may be clogged. There were a few posts on here a while back about the effect of Ethanol on fuel lines.
I had the same problem on my 2006 Merc.225. The fuel line has a lining on the inside that has deteriorated due to ethanol in the gas. Change fuel line and filter and you should do fine. Always use some kind of stabilizer to your fuel and this wont happen again.
Its a good bet that your fuel line is seperating. The problem is all that crap will be in the vapor seperator and will need to be cleaned out. Might as well take it to a dealer and let them assess. Good luck!
