hi from down under aussie landi am going to purchase a basscat this year and need some help making the decision. i am looking at the puma or pantera 4 i need some answers to help choose the package that i needfirstly — i do a lot of rough water fishing and need to know the best basscat hull for the rough water driving i will be doing (open bay swell and chop)secondly – if i got the puma is there much advantage to go with a 300hp merc or should i stick with the 250 opti as i was told the 300 hp would only get about 2 extra mph but a huge gas bill.lastly is the puma better then the cougar ftd???thanks dazza from australia
We will let the others here comment on the hulls and ride. On engines we dont think there is a benefit to the 300 XS vs. the 250 Pro XS. We would stick to the 250 engine for a couple of MPH. BCB
thanks BCB the engine is a huge choice on the package now i just need feed back on the rides
dazzas4x4:On that last question, Puma and Cougar are same hull—just different layout up top. Theres a little weight difference between the two, but thats minimal. Rough water ride and handling is excellent on all mentioned, but a high percentage of the PIV guys will give that hull 5 stars in rough water day in and day out. More will be along shortly to comment on that topic that are more qualified than I. Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your selection process!John HelmsHot Springs, ARLast edited by 2008 silver bullet on May 9th, 2010, 4:37 pm, edited 1 time in total.John Helms Hot Springs, AR
Dazz,I dont know about the PIV ride, have not been in one. Though if its anything compared to a PIII, then its a great riding hull in rough water. My very first time in a basscat was in a PIII and it was the best riding boat I have ever been in! I came from an R boat and its night and day!!! Now, I currently have an 09 Cougar and the ride is even better then the PIII I rode in! I LOVE the way the boat stays on top of the waves and NOT plows through the waves. What a huge difference in ride then other brands. This is where the BCB models excel, they ride on top of waves NOT through waves. The hull just swooshes through and keeps going. I like to take my boat out in a small chop on the water and let it rip!!! YOU wont be disappointed! As far as which model????? Take your pick, all of the 20 footers have the same hull except the new Eyra and Jaguar. I choose the Cougar FTD because I like having 2 huge storage boxes in the front that are NOT divided by the net scaboard that the Puma has. Just personal preference, thats all. There are more Pumas sold then Cougars, but Its just preference. I do believe that the PIV is the best 19 foot hull on the market! The fuel tanks are also different between the puma and cougar, but you can see that in the boat model pages. Good luck and hope this info helps!
20fter with the 250. 10 kinds of fun to drive!
thanks for the comments pantera 4 is sounding good to now but the puma with 250 pro xs will be my first choice , what is the top speed you guys are getting from this setup
Mine is an 02 cougar with an old school yamaha 250 efi. I got it to 78.4 Saturday with a full load and lots of gas. It ran 77.5 with two people(no water in livewells). It was in 80 degree water. The new hulls are faster and the merc screams. You wont be disappointed!
Hey Darren.Just remember mate i am just a call away and i will take you for a run in piv, i know this will make you rest with ease whatever hull you decideto choose, i am wrapped with mine just cant drive it yet,Having a ball learning though. Cheers Simmo.
