I have an 02 Classic with 200hp Optimax 3.0 with single axle trailer. With normal things like the batteries (3), trolling motor, couple graphs, half tanks fuel, oil is there a rough idea of approx. weight? I know actual will depend on exactly how outfitted but trying to see about where it falls. I am looking for another tow vehicle, an 2013 Chevy Equinox or GMC Terrain (rated for 3,500#), as their six cylinder engines are now 301 hp and about 270# torque which would be plenty power. I fish Ca Delta almost exclusively, driving is level and ramps are very easy, not steep at all. Anyone pull their boats with these? Not interested in an 8 cylinder vehicle more looking at mid size suvs. Thanks
Pulling isnt the issue, stopping is !
Thats part of reason I want to know the approx. weight. Also considering a Honda Pilot or Honda Ridgeline too and I know Pilot is rated for up to 4500# and Ridgeline to 5000# with both having close to 20 % less horse power and torque than the 2013 Terrain or Equinox. I do like the Pilot and Ridgeline better but their price differential enough to make a difference as they dont deal as much as the GM products. I know everyone is not pulling their bass boats with vehicles with 8 cylinder engines.
IMHO, you need minimum 5000-5500lb rated vehicle. The boat, motor, trailer, etc,,,, are gonna push 3500lbs +.
Your rig should be sub 4,000 pounds, less with a single axle trailer.
Wow, didnt realize the total most likely over the 3,500# mark, maybe even by several hundred pounds. Looks like the Honda Ridgeline may be the only one of those I mentioned that would “safely” tow my boat (doesnt get any better fuel economy than my truck). Was thinking about something that gets better fuel economy than my 07 Chevy 5.3 pickup – tows great but not very good on petrol though. Prices in Calif have exploded well over the $4.00 mark and even over $4.50 at many stations around here. Over 50 cents increase in last 3 days and going up. Thanks Doug & BBC, answers always seem to be available here.
Bob,I have a 2000 Classic with a 200 and tow it with a 2009 Chevy Traverse, California Edition. With the tow package you have a capacity of 5,200lbs and heavy duty cooling system. I am getting about 16 mpg towing around northern california. Has the ability to handle the Hwy. 20 grade into Clear Lake just fine and has plenty of passenger/storage space.
Thanks for the information. I pretty well gave up on the Hondas as cant get a decent price and I now know the Equinox/Terrain will not work. May look to the Traverse, not sure if I will go with another truck or not – or may just stay with what I have – its paid for!
Bob, any of the SUVs you have mentioned are not going to get much better mileage when towing compared to your 5.3. Another option to consider is a Toyota Tacoma but that wont get you much better than your 5.3 either.
After the responses and thinking about it, in process of hooking up a 2013 Chevy Ext. Cab 5.3 V8/6 spd.auto with Convenience pkg., Custom Sport Truck pkg., Rear View Camera in their new Ruby metallic color. They are locating/bringing one in for me to look at and will buy if I like – since I love my current ext. cab Chevy I am sure will like this one and it has far more equipment in it. I am not a Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Toyota fan particularly so go with what I can get the best deal on and the Chevy is the best deal by at least couple thousand dollars and equipped a little better. Thanks for the responses.
