Good morning, I have a friend who is considering a Ranger Z21 and the Basscat Puma. Im the proud owner of a 2006 Puma and am working on putting him in a Basscat. I have a couple of questions that I need help answering. Not looking for anything but a few simple facts. I dont have to be sold on Basscat. 1. Are there any upgraded seats available in the Puma or are they all the same? He has back trouble and likes the Ranger seats better. Ive told him about the lumbar support. 2. How do these boats compare as far as beam and depth of the boat. Does Basscat still offer the widebody Puma? 3. Will Basscat be offering a 21 foot boat in 09? 4. In what month does the model year change at Basscat and when are the 09s generally available? 5. Is the 5 year warranty available on the Mercury XS at this time? Im sure Ill ahve a couple more but this will get us started. Thanks for a great product. RJ
1. There are no upgraded seats available. While he might like the Ranger seats better, hell appreciate Bass Cat hull better in that it will offer a better ride. Those that have back trouble usually stay away from the “R” brand. 2. The 08 hulls are a knock off from the widebody style. Beams are similar in width, but Ranger will have a larger beam. Depth? If were considering depth as part as hull being drier in rough water, this characteristic goes to Bass Cat hands down. Theres no comparison here. 3. 21 footer wont be known for a few weeks, but my bet is they wont. 4. Model year changes in August and generally available mid August – September. 5. No 5 year available at this time unless it is purchased from dealer stock. This promo ended last Saturday. Remind your buddy that Bass Cat has a lifetime hull warranty for the life of the hull and not a warranty that is reduced to subsequent buyers. Bass Cat is built with state of the art materials and techniques and has the best customer service known to mankind. In addition, it will top Ranger in performance in practically every category.
1. The 2008 seats are improved in them..I think they are much better than the 2006s! 2. Im not sure on beam & depth diffrences between the 2… No wide body hull for 2008. The all new hull found under the 2008 Cougar FTD & Puma is a wider body hull and has improved ride and performance…Its just plain AWESOME.. 3. Cant speak for BCB but Id bet NO on a 21 for 09.. There is no real reason for one..If you take a tape measure to the Puma or Cougar FTD you will find it has as much or more usable deck space than most 21s. Also with the state of the economy and fuel prices I cant see going to bigger. 4. The BCB dealer meeting is July 20-22 and 2009s will be available starting then 5. No the Mercury promo warranty (5 yrs.) ended June 28th Your buddy owes it to himself to ride in both new models and I think he will find the Puma or Cougar FTD will shine over the R boat…my .02 worth………Sherm
Question for Phil. I respect your years of experience. I rode in a new Z21 this weekend in a BFL event. It was very rough Sat afternoon with all the BIG boat recreational traffice. I was impressed with the way it handled the rollers at speed. Operator was a very experienced driver and knew how to handle a boat very well. So I guess my question is what difference would a Bass Cat have made. I will say I did get wet 2 times in high rollers we had to go over. Looking at a Puma myself and was glad to get to ride in a Z21 to compare. Layout is no comparison. Bass Cat hands down. Just wondering.
UPSCat If you were impressed with the Z21 ride I would be very surprised if you didnt come away from a ride in a Puma that much more impressed. Driver experience and driver personality has a lot to do with how good or bad a boat rides, but all thing considered equal I would say that a Puma will outride Z21. A Z21 probably isnt even in the top 3-4 rides! Its in the personality of the boat. A Z21 tends to run flat where a Cat will run on top since it gets bow lift much easier. In addition, I would bet that there not a boat drier than a Puma or FTD. To this day I still am impressed at not getting wet in some of the stuff Ive been in. On top of all that you get a boat thats approximately 5 mph faster or more with equal horsepower. If you favor the layout of the Puma, then its a no brainer! With all being said and to please your curiosity I would suggest riding in a 08 Puma or FTD. The 07 models ride good, but not as good as the 08s!
You might refer your friend to this website, or perhaps copy it for him. Note that there are two pages to it. http://www.jdpower.com/boats/ratings/bass-boat-ratings
There are some great boats for sale on this site and on impactfishing.com that have low hours and have 4 years of warranty that will transfer if he is looking for the better warranty. Mine is listed and has less than 30 hours on the motor and has warranty until June 2012 it is a 2007 Puma with a Mercury 250 Pro XS. There is not a better riding boat out there I have been in them all and I know a Ranger boat will not ride as good as a BassCat and a Ranger will get you wet and I have not got wet yet in my BassCats fishing on Kentucky Lake in some rough water.
