your brakes are not electric! disconnectng the plug between the trailer and tow vehicle did nothing for you as the brakes work on surge. and the wheels with brakes will always be hotter than those w/out. i seriously doubt you have a problem. you likely locked up the tires as you was braking and thats where the smoke came from.
I thought I needed a 5 prong vs. 4 prong for brakes. I have a Ford F150 with tow/haul mode that down shifts on downhills. Would that lock up the brakes? Thanks for your response.
you only need the 5 prong connected for two things – lights (brake, blinker, running lights, etc) and to engage the backup solenoid when the tow vehicle is placed in reverse.Advantages are taken, not handed out…
The brakes were smoking when I stopped. I was on Saluda grade which is about 3/4 mile steep downhill. My truck will downshift while in tow mode. I have a new f150 Ford with the Ecoboost engine. I dont know if brakes were engaged all the way down the hill or not but I did have to hit them hard at one time on downhill. Back axle rims were very warm when I got home. I will have someone look at brakes but dont know how to prevent this in the future. I had gone to Lake Douglas in Tenn to fish and will go again soon and will go down this grade again. I also had no scratches on the bottom of my boat and both times I have loaded I have scratched to bottom on something on the trailer. I actually heard the scratching sound. I have felt for anything that could be sharp and scratch. Any idea what I am doing wrong or check. Pretty nasty scratches. I need to order paint from BCB to touch up.thanks
Had everything checked out on trailer. All seems fine. Just did not disengage because no acceleration after hitting brakes hard on mile long downgrade .
On a long downhill with a hard stop my back axle brakes started smoking pretty bad. I stopped and unhooked wiring and made the last 20 miles w/o lights and brakes. I checked rims when I got home and they were hot. Have I damaged my brakes and do I need to have them checked? I have a Sabre with double axle.
09 Sabre I have felt of bunks when boat is off trailer and all feels fine. I think it must be the middle roller somehow. Didnt know if any other Sabre owners had that problem.
