I have had a couple of wiring and water leak issues in my BayCat and learned that the rear compartment is really cluttered. I am thinking of moving my 2 troller batteries to the center console to free up space and to limit the number of wires that are run in bilge. I am also thinking it will limit corossion on my troller wires because they will stay dry. Do you guys at BassCat think this is a good idea? Any reasons why I should not do it.
The console is limited on lower bracing and if you run rough water it might not be durable enough in the floor on the older models. Newer models have more bracing for this reason. BCB
Yea, mine is an 03 and I am only running a 24V system. You think the floor in the console is not strong enough for 2 batteries?? Thanks
Ive given some thought about moving my batteries to the console on my Baycat. Ive constantly got corrosion problems with my trolling motor wiring. I cant even run my trolling motor on high as it blows the circuit breaker. I need to get new wires I guess. My Baycat is an 09, so I guess I shouldnt have any floor issue with moving the batteries to the console?
Billius, You may have a weak circuit breaker. I had to replace mine and had no problems since. The wiring shouldnt be an issue for an 09. Its pretty heavy. If theres a short in the wiring it would trip breaker at any speed. Corrosion is a factor in the salt water models. The internal thermal plates degrade pretty fast. Had some put shrink tubing on the breaker and stuff it with vaseline. That seemed to work well for a while. BCB
It has crossed my mind to move my two trolling batteries to under the console. I have a buddy with a BayCat and his were are already under the console when he bought it, dont know the year model. Mine is an 03 so I dont know about the strength of the floor under the console. As for the circuit breakers, salt water and those things dont work. I just cut them out and wired the trolling motor direct, probably not the most safest thing to do, but it eliminated a problem. BassCat should consider mounting the batteries under the console on the next year model or redesign the bilge. If yall ever want any input on a new layout design for a BayCat I have a list of suggestions. I love the boat, it always turns some heads (fast, smooth and dry) but there is always room for a little change.
BigRed, Billius. It appears you run in saltwater as much as I do. Have you had any wiring corrosion problems in the bilge? Seems like lately every time I go out, either a bilge pump, aerator or livewell fill will not work due to a bad connection in a wire or terminal. Does you boat have an abundance of wires in the bottom of the bilge like mine does? There are some engine connections that I am trying to tie up in case of a leak(just had one) but the mess of wires makes it difficult. Any thoughts???? Still Love the Boat, just been frustration lately… Also, any one with BayCat in south Louisiana last week end for Tarpon Rodeo?? I saw the first BayCat, other than mine, down here at the Galliano Wall Mart as I was driving by.
BayCat43, Ive had the same problem with losing power to my accessories, bilge, depthfinders, etc. I checked it out and the ciruit breaker by the cranking battery was almost totally shot. I replace it and had no problems, I did cover it with vaseline. I did replace the breaker in the trolling motor wiring…but it didnt help. I still cant run my troller on high.
I have had some minor problems with a livewell fill pump not coming on, never a wireing issue if anything its a bad pump pop it out pop in a new and go on. I dont really recall a bunch of wires in the bottom of the bilge, but there is a bunch of wires in there. I dissconnected my port and starboard pumps in the rear deck compartments and pulled them out. This helped with some of the wires being in the way. It also freed up two switches on the console for my livewell and baitwell pumps. I moved some wire around so I can fill the front baitwell without putting water in the rear livewell. Same with the recerculator pumps, I can run one at a time. As far a power to my accessories just minor corrosion on a switch maybe. With the trolling motor we took the minn kota off about a month after I got it, and put on a motor guide. I have a problem with my GPS some days were it starts blinking, it still works fine while its blinking but I dont know whats causing it. Maybe getting hot?
