Battery Group Size Question

Hi All, Looking at Cabelas AGM batteries to replace my TM set, I noticed there is very little difference between Group 24 and 27 batteries, five marine/cold cranking amps and two minutes reserve capacity, BUT the Group 24 are 9 pounds lighter and 20 dollars cheaper. Any reason not to go with the Group 24 and save some money, weight? Thanks, BAM

Yes, Reserve Capacity will be different> The weight is in the plates and the heavier batteries will have more capacity. BCB

Go with the 27 unless you are talking cranking battery and then (at least with the Optis) you need 1000cca. Most of them are 24 group that has that ccas. Judd Lasiter

I recently bought a Cabelas grp 27 AGM to replace my starting bat. Frankly, I am a little skeptical about the accuracy of their ratings…seems like 9 lbs of lead would be worth more than 5 CCA or 2 reserve minutes. And the combined specs (CCA & reserve min) on my grp 27 AGM battery was better than just about any other competitors gel or AGM . Just seems a little odd…in any event, Im hoping it will be as good as advertised.

BAM, I may be the only one here with this opinion, and there are several very intelligent folks here, especially BCB who have forgotten more than I will ever know, but for me as a serious tournament angler, my philosophy is to put the largest, highest rating batteries in my boats that I can afford and have space for. Personally, I like series 29 and 31 batteries. With the expense of our boats, a few dollars will not even be noticed once the purchase is made, and these Cats run so well that I am not sure 99% of us could ever tell the difference in performance if someone switched our batteries without our knowledge. With all of the large screen, color electronics, water and bilge pumps, aerators, etc, I want to be sure my cranking battery not only has enough power, but extra power when it comes time to turn that key. As for my T/M batteries, I want to be able to fish current, wind, etc. all day and run on high across bays at will etc., with no worry of running my batteries down. I always try to make my decisions thinking that if I may make an error, I want to err on the side of caution.

Im a junk fisherman and I stand on my trolling motor hard all day. Over the years I have tried allot of different batteries and the best I have found is the Trojan 225 SC . They are heavy, but they Will last. There is no such thing as a trolling motor with to much thrust and there is no such thing as light batteries that will last.

Bam, I bought a pair of the Cabelas Group 30 AGMs last Year to put in my Pantera 3, the extra weight has not made any difference in speed. I fish nothing but Tidal rivers on the Upper Chesapeake Bay and am on the trolling motor thruout the entire tournament fishing against a strong tide pull. I run my aerators constantly along with 2 graphs on constantly and these batteries have been great. Prior group 27 wet cells I used would be run down by the end of the day going against the tide, but these 30s have a lot of juice left after a tournament.

Bam, I am using Interstate SRM-29 batteries and have been very pleased with the performance and the cost.

I also have had good luck with the SRM 29s. I upgraded from the SRM27s and have noticed a big difference.
