I have an 07 PIV (purchased in March) and I have had three cranking batteries go bad. I was hoping after the first two that it was a bad stock, but the third one (just got it on Wednesday) died on me during a tourney today. Is there any checks I can do myself to find out what is draining my battery? Is it possible that I may have just been really unlucky and had 3 bad batteries? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Okie
No something is up. We dont know who tv dealer is, though they too should be suspect. There could be an engine regulator out or a chargoing issue with the stator. We think you need more help on this one. Check your voltage when you are running and see what this is when running. Then we will try to help more. Not much help now for you, though somethng Id not right. How long does a batt normally last? BCBLast edited by Bass Cat Boats on January 13th, 2008, 4:51 am, edited 1 time in total.
I have it charging tonight and I will take it out on the water again tomorrow to check the voltage while running. The battery was charged (green light on 4-bank charger) and we started fishing at 0630. It was about 1400 when it died on me. I had the normal equipment running (recirc, aeriator, front depth finder, GPS). This is exactly what happened with the original battery when I bought the boat. I took it back to Brech Marine and they did a load test and found out it wasnt performing right. The second battery ended up with a bad cell (died on me while I was deployed to Afghanistan. My wife charged my boat every two weeks while I was away and that is when she noticed the blinking red/green light on the cranking battery side of the charger). The only difference I noticed this time was when I would start the motor, it would turn off my front depth finder. Not sure if that means anything, but that was odd. Thanks, Okie
Okie, You have issues here, no doubt, but you dont say what size battery–24,27, 31 series you are running. I have seen some boats recently rigged with 24 series starting batteries–a true cranking battery, and these batteries often do not have the staying power to provide all day 12 v power to all our accessories, plus crank the newer, power hungry computerized engines. I ALWAYS use a 31 series Trojan SCS 225 for my cranking battery, and Ive never had a problem. Just one more thing to think about in your search for a solution to this problem. Mike Whitten
The battery in question is a Powermaster Marine Cranking battery. I can not find any model number or type anywhere on the battery. It does have a couple of part numbers on the top (24M-1100 and 24M-650). I searched google, but no luck. Where can I purchase a 31 series Trojan battery? Thanks for the help, Okie
Okie, a 31 series is the one of the biggest deep cycle batteries made by Trojan. It will do fine for cranking your boat but they also make another battery just for cranking these newer motors. It is called a 27-1100MF. I have had one in my boat going on 2 years and not one problem plus it weighs a little less than the 31. I also have 3 27-TM for my trolling motor. Bought all of them at the same time and not one issue out of the 4. I agree with Bass Cat though and think you have other issues I would be looking into also. Very unusal to have 3 batterys go dead like you have. If you want to put trojans in your boat than I feel sure you have a dealer some where close to you. Good Luck with your problem !!! Here is an # 1-888-647-6527 that you can call for a dealer near you or you can also go to ( http://www.trojan-battery.com/ ) and put in your zip code. It will find the closest dealer to where you are at. Good Luck JW
Thank you for your replies. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what could possibly be causing this issue. A friend of mine has an 07 Puma and he is on his second cranking battery. I did notice, not sure if it means anything though, that when I plugged in my 4 bank charger after fishing a tourney on Saturday, the lights for the three trolling motor batteries went to green within a few minutes. Kind of odd since I used the heck out of them all day trolling on the lake. Is it possible that the charger may be the cause of the battery issue? Is there a way to test the motor to see if it is charging the cranking battery while operating? Thanks again for any help on this confusing issue. Okie
Okie, I have been having the same problem. I check my batteries every 2 weeks, went to Lake Of The Ozarks in December my optimax would not hardly turn over. I fished the whole day and did not use any of my electronics or pumps and the motor started everytime. Went to Stockton lake a couple weeks ago, the opti would just turn over but not start. I tried jumping with cables no go. I then unhooked the wires and crossed to the trolling batteries to start it and it started then put the wires back on the cranking battery. Fished all day with no electronics! Got home plugged the boat in and all batteries charged in a couple minutes!! I thought this was strange since I had been on the troller hard…. My cranking battery is a year old Pro Guide second one I have had my boat is a 04 P4! Any thoughts? Earle
Earle, Is one of these your batteries? http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch … toview=skuGod Bless, Stephen
