Battery tray problems

During the past several months Ive had the screws that hold down the battery tray strip out of the glass. I then used brass screws to hold it down but last week I got into some pretty rough water and sheard the head of the screws off. I now have to redo this again and i was wondering what type/grade screw I should use. Should I try to go back into the same holes with a bigger screw or shift the tray where i have to drill new holes? also what length screw is recomended?

on my last boat I used the same holes , filled the holes with epoxy and used the next size up SS screw. same length with the epoxy still wet. pete

The trays are now mounted down with Windshield Urethane, and those holes should be sealed up with fiberglass after it all dries out. There should be a local show that could reset that area, and increase the thickness in those holes. You should relocate the boxes slightly and the screw hole location. The battery trays should urethane in place. If Iaconelli cant tear them out, you wont with Urethane. BCB

NO, it supplements the bite to the floor and they are not dependent on screws only. We started this after finding screw holes wallowed out in floors and silicone was not strong enough.

Be sure and seal existing screw holes with epoxy or similar sealant before remounting. Dont want water intruding thru old holes. 1. Where is the urethane applied? The whole base surface or just some spots? 2. Is there a need to sand the fiberglass or apply a urethane primer first 3. Do you pre drill starter holes for the screws and what size if so? Thanks appreciate the help

1. We use it to seal the screw holes, and apply in a strip to hold hte batteries as an adhesive. Not overly, though it should squeeze to a 1″ line in areas. 2. You should not need to sand the glass or apply primer like in the auto business. That will help, though is not necessary from our experience. 3. Yes and hand tighten the screws. The hole is dependent on the size, much like your high school shop teacher taught you on woodworking.

Was thinking about moving my batteries and putting the trolling motor batteries behind the drivers seat to better balance my boat. So how hard is it for me to get the trays up off the floor? 2008 Puma To answer the question that I know is coming, I want to move the batteries because my boat lists (leans) heavily to the passenger side.
