If you take care of them, they will last just as long as using them in freshwater only. Its just more work to do so. Flush the engine each time, hose the whole boat down, including the trailer. Ive ordered the boat with a galvanized trailer so that should help to deter rust on the trailer. I plan to use an old fashioned lawn sprinkler to wash the underside of the trailer, brakes, axle, etc. Plus the BayCat has sealed connections in the wiring to help deter corrosion.
If it makes you feel any better, I live in Southeast La. and use my boat in Fresh, Salt, and Brackish waters. Have since the day I bought my 2001 classic. I have had no issues with corrosion. As Billius states, you just have to be more dilligent in cleaning and rinsing things off. Generous spraying of WD-40 on connections and bolts helps too. Never had any electronic problems, due to corrosion anyway. The Galvanized trailer is sure to be a fine upgrade. After 8 years the only issues Im having with rust are at the Trailer Bunk to bracket connection. This is not a big deal, I just need to remove the bunks and clean up those brackets and Re-prime and paint them. Ultimately, your buying into a company that builds a quality product and with the correct care and maintenance from the owner youll have year after year of great service from your new Cat. Drop that baby in the Salt and let her eat. I know I enjoy chasing the different species like Red Fish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, as well as the beloved Large mouth bass. The beautifull thing about living down here is you can often times catch all in the same trip. Although the Triple Crown (limits of bass, reds, and specks) is hard to come by, a mixed bag is quite the norm in certain areas. If it means my boat has to endure a little salt, then so be it. She still cleans up nice. I just cant wait to hear some performance numbers from you on that thing when you get it. I know the Bay Cats I looked at in person were very impressive looking. The dealer made some pretty bold top end predictions on what these boats should do. Im curious to see how real world numbers stack up. Hang in there Billius, It will be worth the wait!! I have a 03 BayCat that has seen way more saltwater then freshwater. Only problem with corrosion as been like Shap from La said at the bunk brakets on the trailer. The brakes system lasted a couple years, but you cant rinse everything every morning after you unload at the boatramp so we pinned the surge ram at the front of the trailer and have kept on rolling down the road. It has been a great boat so far. Fast, smooth, and dry.
