BC boat cover/road trip

Ive heard it said that making road trips with the boat cover on may damage or scratch the gel coat. Is this so? Anyone had issues?

Yes, some have had issues with scuffing the gel coat by using the cover on road trips. I believe the main problem is a cover that doesnt fit properly or that is not tightened down VERY-VERY tight. If the cover isnt tight, it will flap in the wind and can cause some scuffing of the gel coat – usually around the top cap area. One other thing that Ive heard of people doing is buying a large roll of shrink wrap (similar to what is used to wrap pallets of freight) and wrapping around the boat 4-5 times to prevent the scuffing. You would just need to wrap around the top cap area and maybe around the motor cowling. However, lots of folks just travel without the cover and clean the boat real good when they arrive at their destination. Its a preference. Good luck. I have the Aurora cover. I live in Texas the boat with the cover on has been to Florida and back twice. Alabama and back Arkansas and back and I did not have any damage from the cover. Put the cover on with the motor trimmed up some. tighten the strap around the motor and then trim the motor down on to the motor toter that will make the cover tight really tighten the strap that runs under the rub rail at the transom. put a twist in the straps going to the trailer frame so they do not vibrate from the wind. check all straps for tightness when you stop for gas.

Most have reported more problems with the Deans cover than the Aurora. I have the Deans cover and have used the shrink wrap on the few occasions I used the cover on the highway. The wrap will work well and you will have no worries. Like the man said, just wrap around several times on the contact areas of your top cap and your good to go. Picked mine up at office depot. Those who have experienced the scuffing say they have been able to buff the scuff marks out. Joe

I also use the cellophane wrap, but I took my Deans cover to the local canvas shop and had them add what they call corvette cloth to the inside of the tarp where it touches the boat. Seemed to cure the issue for the short runs and the long runs add the cellophane shipping wrap as the other guys posted.

Very helpfull, thanks. Especialy putting a twist in the strap! I got the Deans cover and will do a little tinkering. Maybe line the inner perimeter with the dust cover I have? or try the Vett cloth. Think putting the cover over the “dust cover will solve the scuffing issues?

I have to use bungee cords to secure my cover, and if you dont pay close attention to making sure those bungee cord hooks have adequate clearance, they can scratch the dickens out of your gel coat, especially when theyre vibrating in the wind! I use the poly straps with plastic hooks and they can rub/scar your boat just like the metal-hooked bungees!
