Was at the boat show over the weekend and someone commented that BCB did not have NMMA certification. I was curious what that really meant in the world of bass boats?
Thats Right, and proudly not one! Now you are going to get a book, and is only one paragraph in a chapter of a full book, in relationship to why we are not NMMA members. NMMA is not a governing body, they are an organization that is a lobby group and has no enforcement. They use USCG regs, and on occasion the USCG uses their guidelines as suggestions. They do have the grow boating solicitations which the engine companies have pressured the boat companies into collecting a fee of $60 or so no every outboard that is sold. The engine companies then gain the “look what we did” feel good about the grow boating campaign. The advertisements and more you see. Though we feel it has only created a bureaucracy of paid solicitors. All on the back of you as a retail consumer. That fee is charged by all those boat companies after the sales are produced to NMMA by the engine manufacturers. If the engine companies truly wanted to do this, then why did they not just charge more and give the NMMA that fee without all the motions. It is a waste of time and money. The #21 and #19 steering manuals produced for safe installation (with Teleflexs input) were designed around our installation guidelines and our suggestion of installing hoses inside of a jacketed outer hose. Also on the manual steering installation. Which we have not figured out yet why Teleflex does not just build a more protective hose? So it is a matter of motions with NMMA membership. Lip service is our opinion. As a Bass Cat Owner you know how much we work on safety and also on promoting our sport. They utilize USCG regulations, and we comply with those which are both NMMA and USCG standards. Though they also have shop certification standards and more that fall into play. One of our major competitors has three times as many issue with their new product on documented survey, though an NMMA member, and they also have a couple of NMMA CSI awards. We also would have to produce numbers and sales for NMMA which we consider private information. Plainly none of their business. The NMMA does have some valid positions, though from our perspective, not in looking out for the entire industry from top to bottom. Only looking out for those manufacturing members. The elimination of engine model years was a concentrated NMMA effort by that membership. In a conference call with 26 builders, we were the lone dissenter on desiring a model year for outboards. Sometimes the dealers and retail public benefit from those efforts, and sometimes we do think it is in the interest of our business or sport. We like to protect everyones interest as best we can. Another example is the present desire by NMMA to rotate model years to Sept 1st. We at BCB prefer to release new model years in line with the USCG regulation that we have to by August 1st. Thus the last several years we have complied totally and no sooner than the last week of July have we released our next (Example: 2008) model year. Though those same NMMA members that want a change constantly release new serial numbers as soon as April, though claim those are only tagged as new models (08) and are not the new models? Something again that confuses the consumer in our opinion>? Last year there were 67 Customer Service Index awards given by NMMA, there are not 67 number ones. There were several bass boat companies which received an NMMA award, as pat on the back. It is a public relations media campaign at many levels, in our opinion and yes we are an Independent truly. We hope this answers your question, and the topic has come up here once before, though this is a more thorough description. BCB PS: JD Power and Associates only give one #1 in each category, and only one #1 overall the Marine Industry is shown.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. It would figure there would be a marketing slant hidden in there. The boat shows are great and convenient for seeing all the products up close but it also a great place for manipulative marketing and half truths. Thanks again BCB for being forthright on this!
