BCB – Side Imaging transducer Mounting

2007 Puma. Im considering springing for one of the side imaging systems & leaning toward Lowrances “Structure Scan” system which will deliver starting in November. On their web-site there is a video that shows the transducer mounted on a bracket on the transom beneath the jackplate. Personally, Ive always been quite averse to mounting things on the transom that require holes to be drilled. BCB, please weigh in on this issue and provide recommendations and/or alternatives. clw2613, you can drill and tap a hole on your jackplate. Have done this on a friends boat, but he has HB unit. Dont think it should be much different. Am sure someone else will be along that may have better idea. Do not like to drill into transom myself. pant 2 Bob

One thing to keep in mind if mounting on the plate instead of the transom is the fact that the mount will most likely be on one side of the motor and might be “hidden” when shooting to the opposite of the boat. Like, the lower unit will be in the way of the krypton beam. KnowwhatImean? Have this problem on my Hbird SI. Problem solved by trimming the motor up to the tilt position. If you have a shady shot on the opposite side of the tducer after mounting, might hit the trim and clear it up.

I mounted my SI transducer at the very bottom of the jack plate with a couple of Machine screws and not into the fiberglass. This has worked very well for me but I do see where Mr. Short is coming from with the possible interferance with the motor trimmed down. I have not experienced this however. Go ahead and spring for it. I think it is well worth it and will open up your eyes a little to what is under the water. It does take some time getting used to how to judge the images. You will have to learn to read the shadows more than the actual structure images. The bigger the shadow, the higher the structue comes up off the bottom. I have the Hummingbird 797 and although its the smaller of the units It does a fine job. Absolutely trouble free in the first 7 months of use!! Chris Coupel Paulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.

The one of two original prototypes are at the Bass Cat facility for the dealer meeting. They are still working on mounting, so we can not really comment on the transducer mount. Lowrance we are told is still R & D on the bracket. BCB

when they see all the gadgets weve come up with for fishing. the memories of my grandpa, single small paddle in hand up on the front seat/deck, sculling my little brother and me around in a ten foot (leaking) jon boat, to catch bull bream using cane poles and worms we had dug up from the yard, seem to be fading fast. our bilge was a soup can, as i recall. on rainy days, we had dual bilges (two cans).
