BCB – Trailer Maintenance Question

BCB, I have noticed my trailer has been making quite a bit of noise in the coupler area recently. I have to back my boat up a fairly steep driveway and suspect this is causing a significant amount of additional stress on this area of the trailer. I have checked the brake fluid level but it seems to be okay. Any suggestions on maintenance items I should be looking at? Thanks for your time.

Thats an InclLiNe! Nope, they dont design them for that all the time, though it should not hurt it in the short use you probably give it. Rick had a driveway like that once, his motor had to lowered to clear the door header! The first Optimax Mercury prototype he clipped the cowling on. LOL! That is probably putting pressure on the support assembly inside the coupler and the source of the noise. It will not be an issue and if the brakes are working, then the coupler is fine. The noise we suspect is loosening at the hitch and ball assembly, also check the spring loops and shackles, pivot parts. We are suspect that your brakes are not working. To reduce that coupler stress you should use the lock out tab that came in yoru black bag, with delivery. If you dont have one they can ship one from Parts. BCB

WHAT ABOUT TURNING THE RECEIVER OVER TO GIVE IT MORE HEIGHT

I am a bit confused, do you think the noise is from the support assembly or loosening of the hitch ball assembly? Is there a specific reason you feel the brakes are not working? I will try backing up with the lights unplugged to confirm their operation. I will call parts regarding the lock out tab. I know I did not get one with the boat, long story.

If the ball is any higher, the rear cross member of the trailer will drag the driveway. As it is, it only clears by about 1/2″. If the hitch is any lower, the nut on the bottom of the hitch will drag going up. Before I bought the boat I told my salesman that it had to go up the driveway and fit in the basement. He gladly offered to take the boat to the house for a test run. I think he almost got sick when we pulled up and he got a good look at it.

The mechanism in the coupler is our point in our original post. The only way to approach that drive way is on an angle and the one side rises first. Then once the cross member is cleared you can progress. The ball hitch turning over wont help, it will drag. The disconnecting the brake light wire is a good thing to try out.
