Topic: bent prop shaft

I bent the prop shaft trying to put the cat on plane in too shallow of water. Yea I know better, lol. Anyway the long term solution is to replace it however I need it by this Wed. How hard is it remove and replace the prop shaft on a 250 HPDI. I am thinking of removing it, take it to a machine shop to have it strightend, and reassemble. Anyone out there do one before? No marinas have the “shaft strightening tool” plus the backlog and wait time from any marina is averaging three plus weeks.

Probably not something to tackle on your own. Im pretty sure the lower unit has to come all the way apart to get the propshaft out.

I agree…I think thats something a tech should probably do, unless you have those skills. If I was to start doing something like that now, Id not be done until sometime in December most likely.

While I have been out of the mechanical (automotive) business for many years, I am not sure how feasible it is to straighten a prop shaft. If you have a considerable amount of mechanical aptitude, this project may not be to bad. I agree with Chris and Bill on this. When removing a lower unit, it is much easier with 2 people instead of 1. Best Regards in getting it fixed ASAP.Carky

Thanks guys. I am a maintenance supervisor for the us army so I have the aptitude. However I do not have the oil seals yet or any special tools if they are needed. I think I will pull the lower unit and run it to a shop and have them pull it. While I am having it straightened they can get the oil seals for reassembly. Sounds like a plan to me lol. Thanks fellas.

Mine was .0023 out and my prop man used a special tool that hooks up to the lower unit and got it back within .001 for $150 and it only took a few hours. Is it just me or does Yamaha prop shafts bend easy ?
