Best reel for wife starting out??

Wife finally has an interest in bass fishing and learning to throw baitcast reel. Lookin for advice on reel under the $400.00 mark….I have returned to the basics and last 5 reels have been the $50 academy reel but I want something with better self-control for backlashing etc…..

For that money you could find a used Shimano Calais digital, she would have to work hard to backlash it (eBay). My son learned on the Bass Pro Qualifier the controls are pretty good and easy to use hard to find a better $99 reel. The Quantum EXO is awesome, very smooth and light $249 she wont get tired of throwing it. Good luck, do whatever it takes to keep her interested. Nothing better than husband wife teams, plus it gets you on the lake a lot more

I agree with Judge: Nothing better than the Calais or Calcutta digitals, I bought my wife one and she loves to throw a Rico on it.

My wife loves the Mettle reel from Academy. Very smooth. They put them on sale for $29. Retail is $49.

I have reels the spool bearings cost more than the whole mettle reel. I quit laughing when I threw the one he had. Might want to look at this one for a low cost reel.

I hade 200.oo in reelson a dexk one day and a buddy get in with 3 or 4 academy Mettel reels, some $50 and som $29 10 berings and really smooth,,,,but fir her i was tending to go wirh exo system fir weight and small frame,,never through Calais at any level so i dont know how to rate them

The digital (DC) Shimano reels are very good, though Metanium and Scorpion reels are considerably expensive. Way more than your $400 window. We are with Ward on this in that these reels are that good. You dont need Gold, Tournament Pro is fine. Ward is right – Lews, Lews, Lews. Leave the spool weights all out for max control. Tighten the tension knob till she cant backlash if she tries. The knob is detented, so back it off a click at a time till she learns to thumb the spool and is getting good distance. Its a simple reel, smooth as butter, and extremely easy to adjust for any casting weight. At your “a piece” budget – buy her three….

All good suggestions Brand wise. Based on what my wife deems important……Put together a rod and reel combination with a mind on overall weight. My wife can throw just about any reel (Abu SX, Pflueger Patriach, Lews) that I have. But, when her arm gets tired, shes done. She picked out and bought a Quantum Tour 2 years ago and put it on a Skeet Reese rod (she calls them Lemon Sticks) simply because it was very light. I suppose it was the ticket. Shes bought 2 more Tours since then. Brand aside, keep an eye on weight of the rig shell be using. (plus you have some great spares to use when youre fishing and their off doing whatever it is they do when were fishing.)
