Big motor up or down

Do you leave the lower unit under water when using the trolling motor for extended periods or should you keep the big motor up??

More times than not my big motor is down if I am on the troller…might be jacked up a little on the plate but it is at least in the water and straight (unless I need it to be turned). It helps stabilze the boat and it acts like a rutter back there. It also helps the back in from blowing around in the wind. So unless I am fishing shallow enough that I need to have the motor way up (which I typically dont fish like that) then it is down. Judd Lasiter

Thats what I love about this forum…..nobody is given crap for even the most basic questions. I had this same question last year when I got my PIV, my first bassboat. All the guys on this board are so helpful and provide solid info. You really dont have to have waste your time wading through all kinds of BS to get the real answer.

I leave mine with just a little trim up. I just dont like leaving all the way tucked under…maybe it is me, but I dont like the exhaust ports staying under water needlessly……….96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner

I trim mine all the way down after I come off plane. That way ready to go as soon as I turn the key. Of course shallow rocks or stumps, I will use the bow trim switch to lift it. The only time I raise it is if I am chasing some schoolies, seems to give me a little extra speed.

Down; because the boat will tract straight, unless in shallow water for the above stated reasons. If you pull the motor up the wind will turn the back end of the boat around on you and make it hard to control.

Trimmed down and angle the engine to direct the boat for trolling and assisting the direction. BCB
