I have a 788CI HD unit in my dash, I bought my boat new last April. The depth reading has always been erratic and very inaccurate, I have posted here before and with all the troubleshooting have had no luck. It has never worked right, never. The software is up to date and that did not solve it. Humminbird told me to pound sand cuz Im at the 15 month mark and missed the 12 month warranty. My next option is remounting the transducer, a friend mentioned when mounted if air gets trapped in between it can cause my issue. My question is how do BassCat mount these in the factory? Can it be removed and reinstalled? It sounds like its an epoxy. Thanks
Check your email. Sent you a PM.
I have been having the same issues with depth readings all over the place. Can I get the old transducer up and re epoxy it? Sounds like our boats were built about the same time. 2012 P-II here.
My guess is the transducer is bad and before remounting anything I would make sure that I had another to test against. I assume you have a bow mounted unit? Do they have the same transducer? If so, check your unit on that transducer.
You can check for air under the transducer by filling your bilge with water next time your boat is in the water. Be sure to put enough water in to cover the transducer. If you get accurate readings then you know you have air under it. At that point you can break it free and remount it. Good luck!
I had the same issue with a 789si and a 788 I had on the bow. Both were on my Baycat that I used to have. Neither one would read the depth with any accuracy at all. Sitting still the depth would go from 2 feet to 70 feet, etc. I sent both back to HB (still under warranty). They sent them back, saying there was a software issue. They still malfunctioned. So I called HB again, they said they should work…they offered no further assistance. Later, after posting some questions on the BBC, one guy told me to set the depth range manually, instead of automatic. I did so and the problem was solved on both units. I have no clue if that will cure your problems or not, but you might try it.
Humminbird was no help to me either, once I passed the 12 month mark they pretty much told me I was on my own. I have a 718 on the bow with its own transducer, I never thought about trying it on there. Im going to take it out Sat to run a few tests and see what I can find out before I pull it out and reinstall it. I like Alans idea about filling the bilge with some water to see if the reading changes, as well as mounting it on the bow, that unit gives me accurate reading all the time and is consistent. I updated the software but that didnt do anything. Im pretty sure I have the setting to manual as that is one of the things I think I tried last season but if not I will do that as well. Other than the depth reading it runs very well. Humminburd recommended to either pay them the $200 to fix it, try resetting everything to factory defaults or try it on someones boat who has the same set up and no issues to figure out if its a transducer or unit issue. Unfortunately I dont know anyone and if I knew someone well enough that I knew would send it back to me I would ship it to them, . Im quite confident its the transducer, just unsure if its bad or mounted wrong, Im leaning towards the air pockets. Ill let you guys know how I make out next week. Thanks againJay
BCB models have a multiple year warranty on Bass Cat Humminbird units. They are not me year on Factory Humminbirds.
Billius, I couldnt find a setting for the depth range, would it be categorized as something else? If so what depth to set it at once its off auto?BCB, I do not understand the last sentence of your reply? I took it out yesterday and water in the bilge helped it be less erratic but still made it jump, just less jumpy, so it was easier on the eyes but problem not solved. Swapping the units made both units jump and be crazy instead of just the console unit. Im confused and out of ideas. Its very frustrating. I shot Pete an email but havent heard back.
Cygarbuff, You should find the setting for depth in the depth section in the menu. I dont have the boat anymore that had those units on it. I dont know if its the same as on my 997, but I will look at it and get back to you. As far as depth setting, I just set it for the depth range I figured I would be traveling and fishing in during any given day. In other words, you sometimes had to chance the depth range, depending on where you are fishing.
