I recently came across a 1999 fiberglass bass boat that looks to be in great shape structurally and the asking price seems somewhat reasonable although I havent completed my research. The boat is being sold without a motor so Id have to purchase one which will add to the overall cost. My question is – does it make sense to buy a new motor (150 HP) for an aged boat?

Short answer is “no”. Although I did it myself, you will never realize any resale value on the rig. You did not mention what size boat and how old the rest of the equipment is. You may be buying the boat in good condition but what kind of electronics and trolling motor are you looking at as well. Are they sufficient to get the job done or will you need to upgrade those as well? As said above, many things to consider. Is this going to be your “from now on rig” or are you going to flip it in a couple of years. If the former, then yes, repower, update graphs and make it yours. Will be more economical than purchasing a new rig. Thanks for the responses guys. I agree with your assumptions especially since I would lookto upgrade the electronics and trolling motor with high end replacements. I agree that it would be hard to get my money back and I wouldnt be happy with a used boat long term. Im going to be patient for another year or two and buy a new boat – Margay or Sabre. Its hard to go without a boat, but it will be worth it when I finally pull the trigger.
